Does anybody change their grip based on what club they are using?  I've only recently learned the difference between strong and weak grip and I've discovered that if my grip is too strong on iron shots, I will hook the ball.  However, a strong grip on my drives seems to straighten it out and eliminate the threat of a slice.

Yes depending on the strength of your grip, you can over exaggerate a movement. But a strong grip doesn't mean your going to close the face more. In fact a strong grip promotes an open face and an inside to out swing  path. Now if you over do that, and the clubface starts to shut down a bit, you get a hook.

For me, i know i am hooking the ball if my grip gets to weak. This is because my hands become more active in the swing and my right hands starts to get slightly more over top of the club.

For the most part, i like to play the same grip for all shots.

I still haven't got all the terminology down yet... what I meant by "strong" is that I will move my left hand so that the V points more toward my right shoulder on drives.

Did I mix them up?

Yes strong means that the thumb of your left hand (for a righty) is on the left half of the club shaft. V pointing towards your right shoulder. IF your V is pointing at your right shoulder, that isn't overly strong. Sounds like something else is causing the hooks. I would post a video of your swing on the forum.

I have a swing thread but that's not really what I'm getting at here.  I am not hooking my irons - i'm saying that I have been using a different grip on my driver than I do with irons and wondering if this is normal.  I think this makes it easier to close the club face with the driver which I have no problem doing with irons.

The V on my left hand points toward the middle of my chest on irons and with the driver more toward my right shoulder.

You can if you want. I am not going to say its wrong or right. If it fits your swing, and your hitting shots you want, then there is no problem. I prefer one grip for all shots, its just easier for me.

I actually switched to a neutral grip which combined with my more rotational swing flatter plane complimented it better. The face seemed to turn slower through the impact zone. I have actually taken the left hand side out of the equation used to hook. My miss now is right of the target line. Get a soft draw when I hit well but usually push the shot when I make an error but its playable all the way up to a 3 wood. Driver can punish me but I don't use it much. Perhaps this is the most critical thing to get right a grip that matches your swing because your trying to get the balance right between shallowing moves and steepening ones

Couldn't agree more. Once  I started weakening my grip by 62 degrees it inverted my swing plane across the y axis. The club face then opened 42.2 degrees and the impact zone. The way I found grip to shallowing moves across plane of swing my golf game dramatically improved. Where am I?

I tend to do the same thing, but try not to. I vary my grip slightly when using my 60* wedge the most.

Does anyone know what the pros tend to do as far as left hand position on their grip?

They vary. There's no real commonality. Some are weak, some are strong, some are neutral.

I figured.  Just like some play interlock and some play overlap.

been working on my swing this off season.

Strong left hand hold works the best for me for all my clubs.

I find that if I have a weak grip with my left hand , I tend to flip.

This is just me and I'm sure it depends of other factors too.

But the stronger I can hold the club with my left hand I  better I tend to drive-roll rather than stall-flip with a weak grip.

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
