Normally i carry my driver 250+ meters (275 yards +) but i normally avg 250 with a decent stroke. friday i was carrying that with a power fade or bad swing which was aimed 40 yds left in a fade stance with a new swing. anyway ive been tinkering with my swing shape/path a lot lately and i was hitting a lot of 3 woods at 250 meter carry friday?? why am i hitting both clubs the same? should i go down to a 9.5 driver. it seems i get a lot of height out of my 10.5 driver. i wouldnt ask but i wasnt swinging 100% with my 3 wood - i never do - i swung it at a normal 80 ish. i normally swing 80% ish and carry it 200-225 meters at the most and get a roll out. i only swing hard with the driver.

does this mean i should be at least "avg" near 274 meters (300 yards) "carry" on my driver - i hit them but only when i stroke it, which is seldom.

If I was carrying my 3w 250 M, I wouldn't hit my driver much, but when I did, I would try to make a swing similar to what I was making with the  3w.

i tried to swing similar but nothing.. the same distance even less carry at times with the driver. to top it off, the 3 wood wasnt even tee'd, just off the grass.

i do have different flex shafts. my driver is stiff and my 3/5 woods are regular since i swing softer.

im confused. but, i am working on 3 different swing shapes. a rotary, a vertical and my natural loose swing - the ole' - it's where i come outside over the top then in. a modified furyk/couples

If, and it's a big if, you really are carrying your driver 250m and keeping it in play but your average score is around 101 then the last thing you need to be workng on is your driver. Why are you scoring so high after a 250m+ drive? Do you track your stats? Is it your approach shots with the irons that are killing you? Can't putt? Chipping/Pitching issues?

You need to reassess where the lost shots are coming from because if your scoring around 100 with 250m drives that are in play it doesn't even really matter if you get those drives up 300m because it's not your drives that are killing your scores.

What are your avg. GIR? My guess is your are not converting those 250m FIR into GIR which makes pars a lot harder to come by.

Just my two bits.

101 is my handicap i made up when i joined this board. i wanted 101 proof but it only allows 4 characters, i had 101 in my profile but a mod deleted it for some reason. i dont know the last time i even shot 101. however, i could manage that with a putter and one hand. my fir and gir is 50/50, either i hit them or i dont.

big if? why are distances always an if on this board. anyhow, my lost shots come from consistency issues with getting stuck or lazy and putting hiccups. which is why im working on three swing shapes - to find which is perfect for me and iron that out.

im working on a lot of posture/ ball placements/putting. hell, im working on everything, my woman is really really annoyed by it. this is probably my 4/5th swing change in the last year; im down to three finalists. i swing all day long, even if im not at the range or course. im outside or inside with a club or without one. hell, i do weight transfer drills on the way to the toilet then on the way back too for freaks sake - i work like im trying to be a pro. in reality i call it golf ocd.... i just want to be a "SOLID" golfer one day - im searching for "MY" perfect swing.

I'd say because an amazingly high % of internet posters follow all the rules and hit the ball 250-300+ when compared to what most of us actually witness at most golf courses.

Sounds like you have too much going on with your swing for me to be able to offer any more advice other than the fact that I think my scoring has benefited this season from hitting few drivers.

I called it a "big if" because people that regularly hit the ball 250m off the tee and keep it in play should be breaking 100 easily unless there are some glaring major weaknesses in their game. My previous post went on to say exactly that. Now if your average score is 91 I'm much more inclined to believe that you are consistently hitting 250m drives in play. You should change your posted handicap or average score to reflect where you are at with the game especially if you are seeking advice on this forum, people tend to try and give advice that's appropriate to the level of play the golfer currently has. People also tend to use the posted handicap as a way to gauge the accuracy of peoples claims.

I'm not saying that I don't believe you can hit the ball 250m and keep it in play (lots of people can), I'm saying that I don't believe you can hit the ball 250m and keep it in play and fail to break 100 with any consistency unless there are some glaring weaknesses in the rest of your game. In which case you should stop working on your driver and start addressing the issues that are really holding you back because it's clearly not your drives that are the issue.

Just trying to help.

Maybe because you're aiming 40 yards left and potentially swinging down and across?  I would suggest the opposite, aim right, play the ball just in front of the left shoulder (for a positive angle of attack) and have the hips slightly forward at address (little reverse K set-up).

    • Couple things to update First on the clubs/ball. I switched golf balls to the Left Dash ProV1x. It seems like a great fit for me. I always need lower spin off the tee, it's about a half club longer into greens, and still gives me enough spin with chips and pitches to hit whatever shot I need. The durability is insane too, played 35 holes with one over my last two rounds and it still looked brand new until I lost it. Hybrid is no longer. Couldn’t quite get a consistent strike and the random snap hook left was always lurking as soon as the strike drifted out towards the toe. I know it was me not the club but I couldn’t stand the lefts anymore. Titliest fitting guy came to our club a few days ago and I had been curious about the T200 3iron. I hit a few with it and the stock HZRDUS graphite shaft, it wasn’t bad at all but I could definitely tell when I mishit it. Then the fitter had me try the U505 3iron. When he asked if I was open to trying it I said something like “Isn’t that the game improvement one?” and he said “Just trust me and hit a few with it”. Within 5 swings I was sold. Suddenly it didn’t look as big and chunky when I started hitting rocket after rocket. It did every single thing I want a 3 iron to do. It flies very high, forgiving, can hit it off the tee and ground, can flight it low when needed, and best of all, it doesn’t go left. He had me try to snap hook one left and it resulted in a nice tight draw, nowhere close to a hook. Tried it with the stock shaft and their upgraded one, ended up hitting it the best with the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ-95. Ended up getting a great deal on a used one that arrived yesterday so going to go measure my numbers with it today at the range. I expect to be using this a lot for 2nd shots into par 5s, being that 230-250 club. Hit some on the Mevo+ yesterday and the distance is exactly what I needed.     From a playing perspective, been playing pretty solid so far this season, driving and putting have been solid overall, approach shots have been good for the most part and short game wasn't great to start the year but it's been getting better lately with some more dedicated practice. Compared to scratch over 7 rounds:
    • so with the driver. Feel more arm  width at A4. keep an in the eye on the ball. The first move from the top is lowering the hands down. Don’t mix that up with looking up at the target as the club comes down from A4 with the body. Feel like I get width with the arms from the chest in the Downswing.

    • Went back and reviewed my rounds this year at my home course to fill out the spreadsheet. Realized I have made at least par on each hole but two that I have bogied. At my skill level, it gives me a new confidence that I can play each hole decently well and strong together a lower score. Great mental boost.
    • I'm at 330 I think. I have a spreadsheet with all of them in it. It helps having lived in two countries. 159 in the US and 136 in the UK. Then a handful in Europe and a few in other countries (Canada, Australia, Mexico).
