Because it's fun. What they really mean is "Wohooo I'm so excited to see Tiger Woods in action!"
They are so happy that they don't even know what they're saying.

Sure. They sell beer at the concession stands.

Bag It:

Drives me nuts... Frankly, at the risk of insulting someone on the boards that may indeed partake in such nonsense - I think they're jerks. "Get in the hole" and "You da man" - sheesh, come on, do you REALLY think that is cool??????

Agreed. I admit, it was funny the first 437,000,002 times that I heard it, but now it is annoying and stupid.

Because they record it, and then they can play it back and say "Listen here, I'm the idiot that yells "get in the hole" when he hits it. Told you I was there!!!"

They sell beer at the concession stands.

Probably the best explanation.

It sounds stupid. "You da man" sounds better than "get in the hole" if you ask me. It would be a little better (not much though) to yell it if he were say, hitting a driver on a short par 4 (trying to drive the green). I agree with others, it was entertaining the must million times but now it really does sound dumb. Also, it seems to me it was originally reserved for the big tee shots (with a driver) and now Tiger could be hitting a 4 iron for position and it doesn't matter.

That truly is the reason. I on Sunday at Oakmont, I was on 18's green with a friend. He yelled it even for tap in. He recorded it on his dvr and went hom to see if you could here him. You can.

yes, exciting. If Tiger doesn't play people don't watch. Why? Because those tournaments are boring, plain and simple.

some what true but far from totally be true, you act as if Tiger wins every tournament he enters, and we all know that's not the case. you also seem to forget that, this STUPID term "Get in the Hole" was 1st used on John Daly and not Tiger Woods right?

To suggest this has this become a tradition is just crass . To suggest it brings excitment to golf is just plain stupid , the finish of this years Open was rather exciting despite the absence of some moron shouting get in the hole at every tee shot. The best player of all time is not yet Tiger woods Nicklaus has more major wins , second places and third places , byron nelson has won more consecutive tournaments and Bobby Jones has a vastly superior winning percentage .

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
