Well a chunk and top is basically the same problem, combination of not having keys 1 - 3. Basically if your head moves you have to adjust the clubhead with your hands. If your weight isn't forward at impact, you'll flip at the ball to not chunk it. Both of those things cause the lack of having a flat wrist at impact.

Basically what that means is, you can't deliver the clubhead to the ball consistently. Same with chips. If the weight is 50/50, in such a short shot, then its tough to make a proper strike with out the ball being back in the stance. This causes a steeper angle of attack bringing in the leading edge, making it tougher to achieve good clean contact (the club can dig in the ground more).

Usually when a person gets in the habit of chunking or duffing chips or pitches they don't want to do it. So they will lift up and hit those thin shots. Then they wont want to do that, and they will hit chunks.

Its gets to be a vicious cycle.

Should be forward on chip shots and pitches, just like full shots.

Yep, and weight should be primarily on the front foot. Sometimes when I chip I will bank my right foot to the inside, so there is barely any weight on it. You want to really pivot (rotate) around that front knee. The arms kinda just rock through the hitting area.

Also depends on the lie, i.e. deeper rough, back in your stance.

so glad you brought this up - when you say deeper rough, would you also classify that as a fluffy lie? often times when my ball is sitting up high in alot of grass and I go to pitch or chip...I will literally go right under it! its almost as demoralizing as a shank...I think when this has happened I am playing ball in middle of stance....should it be back in those situations?

I prefer to have the ball towards the middle of my stance for all pitch and chip shots. But then again, my feet are typically no more than about six inches apart and opened a decent amount (probably 30* or so) on a pitch shot, so "middle" and "back" of my stance is pretty relative.

If I have a "fluffy" lie, I'd play the ball where I normally would,,in the middle of my stance. But everyone is different, so you may want to experiment. Also, I would watch as many vid's of chipping, and pitching as I could find, the pros make it looks sooooo easy.

May not be of any help to you but what I found helped my pitch and chip shots was really committing to the shot.  I was decelerating a lot as I made contact which caused chunking, topping or blading the ball.  When I commit to my shot I make good contact and the results are much better than when I decelerate.

Again, probably not the issue for you but thought I'd share – one hacker to another :)

Anywere from middle of the stance to off the big toe of the lead foot. Yes I have hit shots with it that far forward.

    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.  
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity. 
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.     
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before? 
    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
