Anything shorter than that and I'm pretty much money. I can hit my 6 iron right around 150 but when I get to my 5 iron I completely chunk the ball and slice it. Even when I hit it right it doesn't seem to go as far as it should. If I could get my 4 and 5 irons working my game would be so much better. My friends keep telling me that I'm lucky my short game is so good because it is usually the hardest to play. Putting is ok and short game is awesome. If I can pull off about 180 straight off the tee I can see myself being pretty decent at this god forsaken game.

Don't try to kill the ball. It sounds like you are trying to swing too hard to hit your long irons making you drop your back shoulder and hit it fat. A smoother swing with solid contact is much more ideal with those irons.

I struggled with long irons and then I gave up on them long time ago. I don't even buy 3 or 4 irons in my sets anymore. They have so many other options such as low profile fairway woods (#7, 9) and hybrids which get the job done beyond 150.

Replace your low irons with hybrids, unless your a really new golfer and still learning irons. Irons are the strong suit of my play, and I never thought id be a beliver in a hybrid, but I hit a 3-iron about 190, and can consistantly put a 3 hybrid 210, makes a big difference and is easier to hit straight. If your not looking to change clubs, perhaps go up a club, use a 3 over a 4, and swing easy.

If the club isn't going as far as it should, odds are you're hitting it off the toe. Anything else though, I'm afraid is the mental aspect of looking at a long iron, I think. I chunk my long irons when I try to murder them, so try swinging easy.

For your longer irons you may need to move the ball a little more forward in your stance (ie toward your left foot if you are a righty).

If your also slicing the ball, my guess is, as mentioned in the first post, that your trying to over power the swing. By doing so there is a good chance your hands are coming through the ball ahead of your club end and that will cause the face to open up, which in turn will cause a slice.. This is also very common with drivers and something I just learned as well.

I love this site and this game. One question and 50 different answers. I played again yesterday and had the same problem. My buddies suggested that I was dropping my back shoulder because I was trying to swing too hard. Thanks for the suggestions.

Biggest problem with long irons for me is when I try to hit down on them too much. Feeling should be a bit shallower as you progress from short irons to long irons.

Put your 3,4 & 5 irons in to storage and Get yourself a wee 7 wood and a couple of hybrids with lofts 24* and 27*. Swing smooth and easy with these letting the longer, lighter shafts do the work and I guarantee you'll see a total improvement in your game.

    • Yes. The full swing is not that different, and speed is important with all of them. You don't see Tour players hitting their driver 310 and then hitting their 7I 160. Of course, but they're nothing like those for the full swing.
    • How about with the high numbered irons such as the 9 iron? Is the swing the same with that? If that's the case then I stand corrected.  OK, although there is physics involved in the putt too.
    • I have a master's in Spanish linguistics and I like black holes.
    • I didn't say it was unfeasible. That's not what you said. And… be careful there. Not around the club's COM, man.
    • Our public course has red penalty areas marked with red stakes. The stakes are imprecisely placed, often overgrown or missing. Our golf club has no control over how the stakes are placed. We have therefore decided to create a local rule to define the penalty areas by physical features and ignore the red stakes.  Also, most of the currently marked penalty areas are because of an overgrown creek behind dense ground vegetation. The penalty areas are marked (roughly) at the edges of the dense vegetation (see picture example). Players cannot see the creek. The dense vegetation looks the same on holes where there is no creek and no penalty area. For consistency and to reduce confusion, we have decided to define all edges of dense ground vegetation as penalty area.   This adopts a popular USGA recommendation from 2019. Committee Procedures 2C(2) cautions: "A Committee may define the edge of a penalty area by clearly describing it in writing but should do so only if there will be little or no doubt where the edge is. For example, where there are large areas of lava or desert that are to be treated as penalty areas, and the border between these areas and the intended general area is well defined, the Committee could define the edge of the penalty area as being the edge of the lava bed or desert."  We are going ahead, but IMO "little or no doubt" is not possible. For example, the "edge of desert", no matter how "well defined" is often not a distinct line. Sand and grass may intermingle. An edge defined this way will never be as clear as stakes or a line. We will see what happens!  Other comments: I believe the change will improve pace of play. And have minimal effect on handicaps. (Seems like I saw a study of this, but unable to find it again.)    Does anyone have a similar experience with defining penalty areas by physical features? How did that go?
