Cobra fitting issues

My brother, 6'2+", 300lbs, has decided to get clubs. He took a lesson, and  played a few times last year using clubs given to him from buddies. A few weeks ago he went to Golfsmith for a static fitting. He also hit of the lie board. He bought the Cobra Baffler XL Hybrid Irons set, +2 shaft length. Yesterday he received a voicemail, from Golfsmith I think, and played it for me. Cobra does not/won't build shafts that long????  And he should let them build +1, which would not make a difference to him? I beg to differ, I think. He is learning to play and I feel that proper length WILL make a difference, for setup, hitting correctly, etc. YET, Cobra will not build shafts that long? Or could Golfsmith just saying this because of some sort of screwup? I told him to get his money back and go to the pro shop I go to. I got my Mizzies +1.25, full fitting. He only needs a static, yet my shop doesn't deduct the fitting charge. I understand he doesn't want to spend more than $600, and I feel hybrid sets are best for him. Now I don't trust Golfsmith.

Anyone have any experience or views on Golf Galaxy or Dicks? Again, he is learning, doesn't need a full shaft, head forgivness fitting, now. So he won't need the launch monitor, etc. A regular flex, and easy irons. Should I Email some other brands re the +2 shaft length? OR would an inch really not matter for him? Although that's not the point, he was fitted and they refuse to give him what he paid for.

The very first thing I would do is get a full refund!! Inc fitting cost as they have wasted your time and cannot sell you the item you payed for! This is very shoddy service! In ANY industry! However I wouldn't take it personally, he was just unlucky to deal with an inexperienced member of staff Then go get a second fitting as he could have messed that up too!

Also, for what it's worth, I wasn't happy with my first fitting, I told him the clubs felt longer than what I was used to, and heavier, and he responded, I'll get used to it! (I didn't want to get used to it) he said I should I get them 2* flat, then tried to sell me 3 to pw, knowing I'd have to go back and get a gap wedge, in the end I told him what I wanted, I said forget the 2* take half inch off, which would in turn reduce the length, swing weight and lie, Luckily I'm happy with what I got but the service wasn't too good and in future I would pay a bit more and get someone who's been recommended!

+2 sounds really odd for someone of that height. Arm length and posture play a large role in club length as well, but I personally never met anyone 6' or taller who uses clubs that long. I am 6' 2" and I personally use standard length clubs. I would recommend that he gets fit by a different company, or a certified professional outside of a big box store and perhaps (preferably) at a learning/training center. The +2" over standard just sounds strange to me.

Additionally, in my own personal and humble opinion, I would recommend you stay away from Dick's Sporting Goods. If it boils down to a big box store, I recommend Golf Galaxy if you do not have a certified professional at a training center nearby.

I agree with Spyder, +2 is very long.  I'm 6' 1" and use standard length clubs.  The only way I can see your brother needing +2 is if his arms are quite short for his height.  I also agree Dicks's is not the place to be fit for clubs, it sounds like they messed up.

Definitely. Unless the OP's brother is built like a T-Rex, +2" is most likely the result of an untrained fitter saying "You're pretty tall, so you need tall clubs".

Ok. Even so, he was told they will limit the length to an inch. So if in reality, he needs +1.5, or +1.25 as myself(6'), that is still hard to believem they would limit the shaft size. Not sure if it was the hybrids or irons. Regardless. I will tell him to get his money back and go to my pro shop. Thanks all.

Good advice. It's hard to beat your local PGA pro for straightening out issues like this. Your local pro has the experience, resources and training to not only fit someone but to also recognize swing and setup issues that impact fitting. This isn't to say specialst fitters or even the chain stores don't add value, but especially for beginners, their issues are far more than just clubs. With little doubt, $600 invested in some lessons, even if your brother is swinging a set of hickories, will pay much greater dividends. As Spyder hit on with his comment, height is not the only determinant of club length. A major factor, maybe even more so than height, is what is often referred to as "wrist to floor" length. Taller people also tend to have proportionally longer arms; just because someone is a few inches taller than average, it doesn't automatically mean they need longer clubs. While I like your original thinking - in order for your brother to develop good swing habits the clubs must fit him - I think there is a tendency to "overfit" ourselves.
