Oh, I did not want to see the Socceroos fall behind like that. They've don't deserve to lose on a weird bounce.

Australia looks pretty deflated now. I think the dream's over for them.


I think the Netherlands losing because of a ball kicked to the back of a hand would have been worse.

Second, then. The Red Fury needs a miracle in the second half to stay alive. With reports from the Portugal camp saying Ronaldo is out for the tournament, this is shaping up to be a grim World Cup for the Iberian peninsula.

Australia's only hope is if Spain wins. A Chile win eliminates both of them.

Spain a shadow of the team they were a couple of years ago. Casillas having a nightmare in goal, which certainly doesn't help, but what is more striking is the lifelessness of the performance. They look tired, as if they can't achieve the level of intensity that is required. And it's worth remembering that the game Spain usually play is extremely demanding, physically. It doesn't just depend on them passing the ball around, it depends on them working hard when they haven't got the ball, pressing the opposition high up the pitch and chasing everything down. Almost all Spain's leading players have been involved in challenging for championships, reaching the late stages of the Champions League, all that stuff. I think they may just have left too much of themselves at home. Whatever, they're out. I wouldn't have bet on that a week ago.

The more I practise, the luckier I hope to get.
