I often see the pga tour pros backing the ball up about 6 feet but a lot of the time it brings the ball away from the hole. Is spin actaully a bad thing? To be honest I would like to spin the ball just to say that I could but every time I hit a wedge and it keeps rolling but checks up a bit, I always get the ball closer to the pin. What are your opinions on spinning the ball around the green. Do you do it?

When I do it, it's usually by accident. My best iron shots usually take 2 bounces and then stop, that's what I prefer. I play with a few guys who really spin it but rarely are they able to control the spin and the results are usually not that great.

Spin would only be useful to me as I tend to bounce in the middle of the greens to it would back it up to nearer the holes when they are towards the front of the green.

You have to learn to make spin your friend. It takes a lot of practice but you can learn to control spin. When tour pros spin the ball away from the hole they have made a mistake just like hitting the ball off line. They know how to make spin work for them.

I like to see the ball bounce and check. I however have only spun the ball on several occasions....all with the same 56 degree sandwedge, from very tight lies. Spun it sideways about 3 feet. weird.

I once had a whole bunch of PGA Partners Golf Videos. One particular video on short irons, I recall John Cook once saying that you have to learn how to control the amount of spin. He talked about how one can control how much a ball releases (by controlling spin) however you can't control how much the ball spins back....(a result of too much spin...as often seen on TV). ever since I have switched to the callaway tour 56 ball I can tell you they will spin alot, and at times to much for my taste.. I've had that ball back up 2ft on avg, and up to 6ft on wet greens which has put me off at times. another thing that will get your ball backing up is to file your groves and make sure there always clean. so many guys I see have dirt in the groves, sure the surface is clean just not the groves... it makes all the difference.
