My name is Joe. I just started golf about a month ago. A friend of the family golfs religiously and got me started. I am 31 years old and am enjoying the sport!

Welcome. As a 10 a month in you're already ahead of a lot of people. Where you at in NC? Where do you play?

I am not sure what my handicap is yet. I have to change that. It wouldn't let me put in nothing lol. :-)

In a short story how I got started. I am 31 and have always seen golf as "boring" and no skill. Just me being neive. Never even tried it. A few months back, I was with my wife and her family and we all watched the LPGA when Michelle Wei won it. I was not interested at first and then started to become interested with the game. Her cousin is a competition golfer and just got a new set of equipment. He said if I did well trying golf my first few weeks he would give me his one year old equipment (total of about $2,500 with all in the bag including a full 14 set). Well, I went and played a few times and love it! I bought books, shoes, etc and have been training 5-6 days a week with exercise and also playing. I like the driving range and even the xbox 360 games I bought as they help me with the concepts. I am still learning and having fun. Also, I needed a hobby/sport that would help me get some weight loss and golf is helping with that greatly. I m losing weight and I feel more flexible and like I move better in my swings. This is only the beginning and I am looking forward to my future in golf! Joe

Sounds like we are along the same course man.  I am 31 and although I played, or rather hacked, off and on up until about 6 years ago when my clubs were stolen I never took it serious or put any real effort into it up until a few months ago.  At the most I played maybe 6 or 7 times a year so I definitely view this as beginning golf.  Now I can honestly say that I am totally addicted playing at least once a week and driving range as much as possible.  I love to travel and look forward to playing the different courses around the area as well as maybe some longer trips.  Would love to find some similar skilled players to play with and maybe even plan a fall trip to Myrtle for a few days on the links.

Sounds pretty similar! I am looking forward to trying new courses too. One of the best things about golf is the versatility to get out and try new places. ;-)

Welcome to the sand trap!  I'm in Charlotte, but I travel to Raleigh about 6 times a year for work.  We need to have a NC Sandtrap meetup!  This sport is addictive.  I applaud you for your efforts with weight loss.  I'm down 20 lbs since February, and I'm still losing.  One of the best pieces of advice I can give you...

1.  Walk the course rather than ride a cart (assuming no physical conditions that would hinder you)

2.  Do NOT waste your money on cheap golf shoes!  I'm sure that there are good shoes in most brands, but I recently purchased some FootJoy Contours, and these things LITERALLY changed my life!  I swear I'm playing a totally different sport now!

Thanks Indy!!!! I spent a pretty penny on shoes and I enjoy walking the course. I also like the sand trap NC style!!!!

A little bit of a thread hijack here but Heck yeah need to get a nc/sc outing together. Lots of good courses around here to choose from and can't beat the lack of an offseason. If someone gets it going and enough interest we should do it.

I'm all for it guys...though i will admit im not much of a walker on the course...but definitely just getting out and being active the weight is coming off of me in a hurry.   Also, I'm right in the middle of everyone...45 minutes to charlotte, 45 to greensboro, 35 to winston, just over an hour to both raleigh and pinehurst and around 3 1/2 to myrtle.  :)

wolfpackguy with a screen name like yours, I can see the NC support!!! Amazing how many people are close by here in NC. We MUST have a tee day soon. ;-)
