Are top of the line golf balls worth the expense to the average golfer?

Depends on the average golfer's game.

Is it worth it to buy a Nike TW shirt over a generic shirt?

Play whatever you feel like playing, but I don't see how an average gamer can gain a lot of strokes from using expensive balls. It's more important to find a ball that fits your game, and I doubt anyone can't find a cheaper one that works.

If the golfer is still in the stage where he is losing half a dozen balls a round, I certainly do not think it would be worth it to buy expensive balls.
