It's time to get some good results again. This week Luiten will play The Scottish Open, next week The Open. Hopefully he can get his form back and manage to play good, now he's back on European soil.

Fantastic round today, best of the field (-7 / 63). After yesterday's +1 a great recovery and back in contention in the weekend. This got to be good for his confidence as well.

Again a good round (-4) and in contention for the win tormorrow. T3 at the moment and just 1 shot behind. We had to wait too long for this kind of golf, but good to see him in contention again.

4th at the Scottish Open. Excellent result at this strong tournament, and this got to do some good for Luiten his confidence as well. Next: The Open.

What's your thoughts on Joost for the Open? You think he has a chance to contend?

That's hard to say. Based on his previous performances at majors I would say 'no'. Based on his track record in links tournaments and in windy conditions I would say he might have a shot. His win at KLM Open was at a links course, his win at the Wales Open was in windy conditions, same as his 3rd place at Volvo Matchplay, he performed great in the first two rounds at US Open, last year at Doral in bad weather etc. 3 weeks ago Luiten said he felt like his form is getting back and he might start to perform towards his top again. One tournament later he is in contention for the win untill the last hole.... So based on that I hope for a really good performance this week.

Luiten through the turn with 9 straight pars, despite having a GIR of 100%.

Not very good at all, players are killing the front nine, and the back nine is tougher.

Yup. It seems like his putting is not that good today, since he had a putt for birdie at every single hole looking at his 100% GIR. On the other hand those greens are huge, no idea how much feet he had to cover.

He's last! :-(

He's last!

And now Hahn is.

Either way, not good at all. Most players are tearing this course apart right now. Ah well, fits the rest of season but was hoping after last week Luiten would be 'back'.

Well, the weather forecast for his round tomorrow is not that good. I will keep my fingers crossed as well, but my expectations are not very high.

93% GIR after 15 holes, yet being +2 with no birdies is a little bit a mind****. I know GIR is not everything, it also counts how close you are to the flag, but still...

He had decent chances yesterday, he was within 10 feet 6-7 times. you can't make them all but at least he should have made 3 off them.

36 putts is just way way to many, look at the stats off Speith same amount off GIR's but 9 putts less, and 7 strokes better score

His putting.... in his update at his website Luiten starts with 'I didn't play that bad'. It made me fell off my chair. Putting is part of the game, and if you miss every single chance you get (which were a lot) you played bad. No need to sugercoat it.

Hopefully a good recovery in round 2. Maybe we should hope for bad weather all the way for everybody, that might be his biggest chance to make something from it. We'll see... so far it is another disappointment in a major.

  • 2 weeks later...

Schedule for the upcoming period:

Next week WGC Bridgestone, after that PGA Championship. Almost one month no tournaments and then 2nd week September the KLM Open (Dutch Open). Just ordered the tickets to go there myself as well on Friday.

    • Can't brag about a 50 last night but it was the best round of my season (4 rounds of 9 holes) so I am not as upset as I could be.  One thing I am noticed is that I got a little more confident in my long hybrids and I attempted a couple longer shots that typically I would just lay up and those holes were a big part of the lower score.  Not every shot was great but good enough that they helped.  I even shot par on a Par 5 after taking a drop.  On that hole I would usually lay-up to @ 100 yards and often miss the green altogether with my 3rd shot (or worse chunk my approach and put it in the waste area).  Yesterday I went for it from @ 200 yards out with wind in my face and landed in the waste area short of the green.  My drop left @ 40 yards in and I stuck it to 3 feet for my par putt.  If I had laid up I would have avoided the penalty stroke but likely would not have been on the green in regulation and may still have been working for par.  By going for it I gave myself a chance at birdie and still saved par. I do not plan on being crazy aggressive but I think I tend to be too conservative at times so I will "go for it" a little more often going forward.
    • Day 14 (15 May 24) - Worked with the SW in the backyard, short pitches from 10yds up to 30yds.   Focused on ball placement in stance - ball back, ball forward, ball center.  Afterwards moved to inside the shop to work on putting pace on the rug - putting one way gives about an 8' putt, going the other a 6' before bumping onto the adjacent rug.  Focused there on the line - picking a target point about 18"-24" out and making sure the ball rolls through that point.
    • When someone is trying to validate their choice, statements concluding with "right" are often the MO.  Too bad he thinks he has to keep defending his decision, just do like guys like DJ and HVIII - take the money, play the tourneys and keep quiet.
    • I liked Rory talking about keeping it shallow. I think a lot of people imagine steep as really steep. Trackman has a PW attack angle at 5 degrees. Pitch shots you probably want less than 5-degrees.  Here is 5 degrees, the dashed line. It isn't much at all.  People probably need to feel like the club is stupidly shallow if they hit it really steep.  Some good tidbits of information though.
    • Hey, many thanks in identifying those.
