The award, in part, is used to promote golf and grow the game. President Clinton plays golf, promotes golf and is a very visible figure.  This helps grow the game.  Many of the presidents in my life time have been golfers.  I would not oppose any of them receiving an award that helps promote the game regardless of whether I voted for them.

Mr. Limbaugh is an entertainer and his comments should always be viewed with that in mind.

I tend to agree with both statements. But, if criteria are established for any award, they should be followed. Seems to me that they may want to rethink the criteria for this particular award. Interestingly, Limbaugh meets the exact criteria you cite above for Clinton. Who knows, maybe he'll be chosen next year!

As a matter of fact, Clinton and Bush Senior deserve awards for promoting pace of play in golf. They have played together and finished 18 holes in less than two hours. According to Rick Reilly, they routinely gave each other 20 footers. Perks of the office. No one in front and everything on the green is good.

"The Distinguished Service Award is presented annually to “ outstanding individuals who display leadership and humanitarian qualities , including integrity , sportsmanship and enthusiasm for the game of golf,” ( without accounting for sex and drugs...)

If they stuck to the criteria, only angels and saints would receive the award.... and angels and saints don't play golf unless of course, you count Steve Stricker as ...

We've got Clinton, Limbaugh, et al.

Yep. But if they're not going to apply their own, published criteria, they should change the criteria, or risk exactly the type of criticism they got in this particular case.

Yes, my thoughts are they recognize we are imperfect beings, and some criteria are given less emphasis than others.

Makes sense to sweep negative detail under the rug for this type of award when you emphasize an overall contribution ... We can nit-pick details in every life, but let's look at their overall positive contribution to the game ...

    • Thank you.  I'll cross it off the list since it isn't going to achieve what I want.
    • While it does turn out that both Tiger and Phil are less squeaky clean than I previously believed, I don't think golf quite has the worst in professional sports.  Or maybe they're better at image management.   Obviously I'm not fond of Phil's issue we're discussing in this thread (or his involvement with LIV) or Tiger's choices of how to drive.  I used to really like Dustin Johnson and, even before the LIV situation, we started to hear rumors that he bought more snow than Seward, although I don't think those stories were ever substantiated.  Meanwhile, I did think of Anthony Kim as the "good, bad boy" of the tour for a while fifteen years ago because of his party persona -- and if it turns out the worst he did was show up hung over to play (barring what one thinks of LIV), that's pretty good.  And I'm still happy he found a way to get his life clean. If we contrast that with some other sports I enjoy, I'm sure we could find a nice long list of NFL players that, at one point in my life, I was quite fond of, we get far worse disappointments (to put it mildly).
    • Answering that properly would land me in hot water, so I'm not going to. I don't think that many people would do that. I think that in certain circumstances many people would be willing to overlook someone doing that. But I was really referring to what I assumed was Tiger's transgressions (cheating on his wife) not Phil's.
    • No! Is a large part of the human population selfish, apathetic and cuts corners in the name of self-preservation 'more than they would like to admit', yes. Degenerate, scum, etc?.. no!! Most humans/men would not grope a woman like Phil is accused of doing (I think he absolutely did). That is scum. I mean what % of men do you think would do that? Seriously??
