Shortening clubs and shaft flex

Hey everyone,

I'm in the market for replacing nearly my entire set (irons-fairway woods) and I need some advice on shaft flex.  I'm 5'7" so standard shaft lengths have be shortened to fit me. I understand that shortening shafts affects shaft flex so is it worth getting a more flexible shaft with intent to shorten it? (shafting clubs with senior flex to achieve regular flex once their shortened). Maybe I'm over thinking it...

It really only affect the flex if it is trimmed at the tip and not the butt end I believe.  It is called tipping.  You can tip a regular flex to get something in between regular and stiff.

Find a club maker who knows what they're doing.

This.  Just get fitted.  They'll tell you the proper length and flex and much much more.

Don't over think it, just go to get fit. Any Pro Shop or Golfsmith (or the like) can fit you for your size and swing. You are not the only 5'7" player out there.

I have been playing golf since the late 1960s, and I have yet to experience this.

You could "soft step" the clubs or "hard step"

Using reg flex shafts, soft step once or twice will give you the results. (Senior Flex)

Basically, it's just re-shafting each iron with the longer shaft (9 iron with 8 iron shaft) and then but trim to proper length.

Or, (9 iron with 7 iron shaft) would be the effect of stepping twice. (May require a slight tip trim)

Doing the opposite (8 iron with 9 iron shaft) is considered hard step. Using Senior or Regular stiff shafts.

This will not put you in a "stiff flex" situation.

Mizuno offers a free club fitting which they inter-change shafts.

This would give you the best test of what the outcome would feel like.

With special applications such as your requirements, experimentation on your own, is best.

Then if you decide to purchase new or have a custom set built, you will have guidelines to start with.

      I am fascinated by this article. Given so many are upset, I would love to see how the calculations changed for them. In the USA, it likely reduced handicaps, at least for me. In the UK it appears to inflate handicaps but not uniformly?

      To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
