Just an interesting idea, and it makes sense.

Quote:

And here's the simple, self-defeating system by which we try to ruin a good thing:

1. Golfer says something interesting.
2. Journalists blow it out of proportion.
3. Readers follow our lead, misinterpret everything.
4. Golfer is forced to deal with the fallout, gets stressed and annoyed.
5. Golfer becomes more guarded in the future, resorting to cliches.
6. Journalists whine that golfer is boring.

Just substitute athlete for golfer and you get why all these big athletes keep saying the same talking points. When they actually act human, with some personality, they get slammed and then they go back to the typical boring talking points. I mean, I can understand not wanting to give your opponent motivational stuff. Everything is so PR now, it's crazy. I think majority of the problem comes from journalists who like to twist and turn every comment into something its not.

WHY!? Clearly you don't believe golfers are athletes. What do you think Tiger Woods thinks about that? Let's ask him.

Tiger: Matt says you're not an athlete. How do you respond to these allegations?

I will take boreing athletes. my interest in football players is what they do between the lines on Saturday or Sunday afternooon. I am interested in golfers for what they are able to do on the course. While athletes need to be held to a moral standard just like the rest of society, beyond that I don't care. Keep your sports heros and your real life success heros seperate. I think there are many athletes, golfers included, that are good men but especcially when it comes to my children I want to make sure they are admiring their skill, not their character.

Respectfully,

I have not been a fan of any of today's media for quite a while now. As mentioned above, and I wholeheartedly agree, they do twist topics to their own liking, probably for the sake of ratings. They seem to prefer the darker side of news topics. I also think they sometimes they invent stuff for the sake of their own biased opinions.

As for golf, I do like some commentators because of their entertainment value, but that's all it is is entertainment.

It seems reporting the news is a lost art and reporters today would rather editorialize than report.  It is getting harder and harder to obtain factual reporting that isn't tainted by the reporters personal bias.

It's gotten so bad that for a majority of news we have to decide which bias we want to have the news reported in.  If you're conservative, FOX news is for you, liberals love CNN and MSNBC.

Athletes learned a long time ago that anything they say which varies from the traditional rhetoric will be positioned to paint them in a poor light or to antagonize their opponents.   As soon as the athlete stops providing the press with headline worthy comments they are deemed "press unfriendly".   Bill Belichick gets it and Tiger Woods has learned too that the news media is a parasite not a friend.

I suspect they "would rather" do that because that's what attracts viewers.

Only if ALL news stations suddenly and simultaneously reverted to "actual news" would we be able to get back to the proper kind of reporting, and that's not happening. Nor is the only other thing that could work: the vast majority of tv news viewers ignored the trash and stopped watching.
