Hitting Toward another Golfer (Adjacent Hole)

I was 1 under my partner climbing on the par 5 18th teebox. I hooked my drive. It was long left and ended up on the tight rough of the adjacent fairway. I had two options, punch back on the 18th, which is what I did, or hit 3w down the adjacent fairway past the tee to an open area from which I have birdied before. The problem is that a golfer had mounted the tee. He waved me on. I didnt know if it was considered appropriate to drive over his head or at him generally. So I bailed and tied the score by punching back and making bogie. If there is a next time I swear I am gonna unload a long fairway shot, but what is the governing rule about driving players on the tee especially if they wave you on?

If they don't mind, hit away. As long as there is no in course OB, you can play it however you want. I don't believe there is a rule stating you can't hit in the direction of another tee box when other golfers are there. Personally I would have waited till he teed off and was moving away from the tee box before hitting.

There is no rule of golf that prevents you playing to, from or along an adjacent fairway. The only way  this might be prevented is by  an internal out of bounds.  Your choice of shot in the situation described was entirely down to you.

Happened a lot where I caddied as a kid. If you hit right on the par 5 14th, you'd be on the 15th hole blocked by trees. The trees had a wide opening near the green which was adjacent to the 15th tee box. Lot of people hit a long shot towards that tee to have an easier time getting on in three. Best thing to do is point at the people after they let you hit in their fairway and let them know you are coming their way.

I think it is situational,

If the guy on the tee has no one in front of him and can hit immediately I'd wave off his invitation to hit and wait for him to hit and clear the way.

If, OTOH, he has to wait for players in front of him then I would make some kind of gesture to let him know the line I was going to be playing, yell fore, and hit away.

And, FWIW,if I am the guy on the tee in this situation and I can see that the player if playing in my direction I would move behind a tree or a cart or at least get off to the side out of the line of play as much as possible.

I agree with the last FWIW. When I'm in someone else's fairway, they of course have right of way. If I see there situation, I would also make it easy for the other player to feel it's safe. I'd aim at the guy on the tee box. That way he'd never be hit. :-)

LoL I like the thought...being a player on the 18th, and the other guy was on 14, I felt like I should pull the train instead of stopping it because of pace of play.
