I think the answer is “challenge.”

I know, it seems like a tiny change. And yet, there are differences between the two terms that are worth appreciating.

The word “challenge” is a signal that:

  • This is social, fun, and gamelike. It’s connective. (After all, it’s not called the “Ice-Bucket Drill ,”is it?)
  • Difficulty is expected; mindfulness is required; innovation is embraced

Yes, sounds better. I'm guessing it depends on the person the effect it has. Overall, sounds to me less technical.

I dunno. I am a big fan of using the proper wording, and I agree that "drill" sounds boring… but "challenge" doesn't sound right either. Most "challenges" have an endpoint when you clearly win (or lose). This is just ongoing.

I win when I'm able to accomplish the drill, or maybe when I'm able to change the piece I'm working on.

I think it can work, but you have to apply it to a very specific thing.
