My typical ball flight is:Slight Draw

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Hook off the tee or block with irons

The way the shaft loads on the backswing is going to give you some issues. You go "shallow to steep" when you want to go "steep to shallow".

On the backswing you want to have the shaft pointing just inside the ball to allow it to shallow out on the downswing so it points slightly outside the ball. You'll have much better control of the path and the face.

Here's how I would practice this. At home grab a club and get into your golf set-up with your tailbone about a foot or two away from a wall. Then make slow, emphasis on slow, backswings without the club head touching the wall. You will still be making a full turn, don't just lift the arms, turn, create some depth with the arms. If you do your normal backswing the club head is going to come in contact with the wall.

Take note of how it feels to perform the drill successfully. Will probably feel like you don't rotate your forearms and that the shaft is standing straight up on the backswing. Then take those feels to the range and use the camera to check your progression.

Camera is pretty far from you-Nearly impossible to help you with you so tiny in the picture, on an angle, etc Spoke too soon- @mvmac helped you.-Still recommend better camera angles for more help in future

Have previously had problems with lifting the hands rather than turning so this will help! Would the backswing contribute to a hook?

It can yes. The purpose of the backswing is to put yourself in a position to make a decent downswing. Your backswing is affecting your ability to do that. The way the clubs loads on the backswing is causing you to rely too much on timing things perfectly on the downswing.

@mvmac thank for helping - Here is a more updated video

I have had a few lessons as well as practicing your point. The pieces I have been given from the lessons have been trying to not let my left leg straighten too early in the downswing  as I come out of the swing causing it to slice, also to move my ball position for my irons further back as apparently for 'my' swing this would help.

I have about a 5 yard fade on my irons and slightly more the longer the club gets, has it got any better anyone? ha

Thanks and appreciate any more feedback

Hi guys,

Currently my back swing is quite flat and from there typically 4-5 degrees to the left. It then comes over the top. My current flight is straight or a slight fade and bad shot is a slice.  My ball striking isn't too bad and @mvmac has given me a drill to get my back swing more on plane. Once I start to do that should the swing path be less to the left? or do I then have to do work to get the path closer to zero or out to the right.

Sorry it might be a stupid question

Yes, once you get more "steep to shallow" your path will improve.

thanks mvmac for moving the post! I filmed my swing again yesterday and Im still working on not rotating my forearms and turning more as suggested. One thing I have seen in the last 2/3 weeks is that my head is dipping in the backswing, which i didn't used to do!! I've done a few drills suggested by my coach to stop it but I'm finding it very difficult

Anyone have any suggestions to keep the head from dipping and why I might be doing it?

I would first soften the upper back and lower the eyes. Part of why the head lowers is an adjustments to the position of the head/eyes at address.

More on that here.

    • Thanks for getting back. Much appreciated. So how is the distance compared to your previous club? Also, dispersion? In general, did you think it an upgrade?
    • dont worry i was hitting balls in my $20000 simulator room and figured it out anway
    • I believe @GolfLug ask me to post my thoughts on it, but this for anyone interested on an unbiased review. I got the 4 hybrid with a Tensie AV Blue 65g R flex shaft.  This club had one requirement. hit the ball 180 yards. 175-178 is all I can get out of it and I am fine with that.  It did not come with a wrench. Two things about that. One, I have a wrench, two, I have no need to make an adjustment. I thought about adjusting it to close to a 3 to get an extra yard or two, but really no need to. Hits off the fairway with no issue and I took a few whacks out of the rough and seems to do its job. Our rough is not that bad so for any thick stuff I dont know. Bottom line it works. It does its job for me without issue. One thing that so far has been good is that it doesn't bleed off to the right like my driving iron did. It had a gentle fade to it that I had to compensate for when I aimed. I hit this pretty straight so far. Not too high of a ball flight. The shaft is a "mid launch" shaft. I did not Mevo this. The only number I cared about was max distance. If I was all over the place with it I would have tinkered with it and had the Mevo out, but no need. I hit about 40 balls or so with it on the range and then played. I like it , I might get a 5 now. They are $249.00 at retailers everywhere. New models are coming I'm told so that's why they are on sale. Sorry for the lack of technical launch monitor data, the end result was what I was looking at and it did it right out of the gate.
