Fog Golf Fun,or NOT!

Holy cow...we don't have fog in this part of the country very often,  but we sure as hell had fog today!   It was so dense that you couldn't see past the tee boxes.    If you found your ball 100yds from the green, the green was still 100% obscured!  You couldn't see any landmarks or anything to fine tune your line.   Pick a club and fire away and the white sheet in the sky baby!...LOL   I wanted to get done early so off I went to challenge the fog.....

Stone Canyon is possibly the most penile course I have ever played, and I opted to play it while completely BLIND!  Hahahaha.....this is surely a recipe for disaster!

This is the third hole......pretty hole, right?  Miss the narrow ribbon of fairway by 10' in any direction, and you'll never see your ball again!!  Good luck with that ;-)

This hole plays out across a canyon to a sliver of fairway that sits diagonal from the tee. Matching line with distance on this hole is key!!  Better be straight!! LOL

In case you're wondering what it looks like when you CAN see....


Now try playing it BLIND!!  Hahahaha.....

The 5th hole is a nifty par 3 that played to about170yds today..................


Watch out for the trees and native area left, and deep bunker and Canyon to the right!    LOL....fire away!!

Hole 10..............554yd par 5.................

This plays through a tight native forest and rocky bluffs.    Don't stray here!!    LOL    I played the first 10 holes completely bind, and then POOF.........it was gone.   I somehow managed par on 6 of the first 10 holes, but the other 4 were "OTHERS".   I was unable to post a legit round today thanks to the others.........if I carded a HC adjusted score, I scored an 85, but I won't post it because I believe this will equate to sandbagging considering the conditions.

Fog golf stories, anyone?  LOL

Crazy.   We have fog like that some days but there is no way I'd try to golf in that.   Trying to find a golf ball in the leaves in the fall is bad enough but with fog, I'd wait until it lifted.   For me it would be an expensive round, losing golf balls.

I've played in the fog on a number of occasions, but usually it dissipates by the second or third hole. When there are other golfers with you, it really isn't too bad. However, I played a local course solo two weeks ago in the fog and did not see any pin on the green with my approach shot until the 12th green.  I lost a ball on the very first hole, and then decided to  to hit knock down shots at about 80% of my normal swing, so that I could follow the ball a little better. The strategy worked perfectly, and I didn't lose a ball the rest of the day.  The big problem was with reduced distance, I only hit 3 greens in regulation.  The good new is that left myself in a good enough position to get up and down. I had eight one putts after my chip/pitch shot and finished with a 40-40=80.  To sum it up, while I didn't have my A game, I only lost one ball, played in 2 hours 45 minutes, shot a very respectable score, and had a great time.

I don't mind foggy golf. I have somewhat of a bad habit of jerking my head up to see where my ball is going, which leads to all sorts of problems. When there's fog, I completley don't do that.

For some reason I've always been really lucky when I've played in really thick fog. To say I'm not a straight driver of the ball would be a huge understatement. I halfway get by making sure I at least miss to the more desired side.

In very thick fog where I really don't have the option of missing at all, with much hope of finding my ball, I don't miss very often and usually find the ball in the fairway.

No idea why. Maybe it's that I try harder because I know hitting the fairway is my only option...or maybe it's just pure luck.

I didn't take pictures of our round on Saturday, now wish I had, we played in the same fog, different course.  We played at Leavenworth Country Club, started at 8am, fog stayed heavy until about 10:30 or 11, we couldn't see more than 100 yards ahead.  It did stretch out our round about 30 minutes, we had to look for balls a lot more than normal, we only lost 2 balls and that was more about the leaves on the ground than the fog, we lost the same amount of balls the next day without the fog.  I've played in fog, but never that thick and that long, the first 13 holes were pretty tough, it started to burn off when we played the 14th hole and by the time we got to 18 it was pretty much gone.

I've been on that property years ago, but never played that course.....we were definitely playing in the same fog!   Stone Canyon is probably 30-35 miles away as a bird flies..........45-50miles driving.   That was nuts how the fog persisted for so long!!

Hell.......I wasn't even ready to play yet.   Everybody was waiting around for the fog to clear when a 5-some of tourists from TN decided to give it a go...  The marshal told them it was OK to go....  5-somes are not allowed on this course and the marshal showed bad judgment.  This is a topic for another thread!!!!    How the marshal decided to allow a 5-some of tourists to set the pace for the entire course boggles my mind.  This was my calling.......no way in hell will I play behind that!!......so off went as a single in front of them.  I know him pretty well and we are friendly, so I later asked him WTF were you thinking!!   LOL....I can elaborate more later on that...

This day turned into one of the prettiest days imaginable with amazing crisp blue skies..........

I remember playing in the fog on one unusually warm December day. Had to be quiet and listen to see if the foursome ahead got off the green. Sound of the flagstick going back into the cup was the "all clear" signal. Wish we had GPS rangefinders back then.

I generally don't like playing during a fog.  But I played once in PA when it was foggy, it was about 10 years ago.  I hit a 5-W off the tee on a relative short part 5.  I couldn't tell where the ball went.  So I re-teed and hit another ball.  The second ball, I could see its launch direction.  So I walked towards where my second ball should be but thinking my first ball was lost as I had no clue which direction it went.

When I got to my second ball, I found my first ball about a foot away from my second ball.

      Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.

      I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.

      Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.

      In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.

      Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
