I am a 18 handicap and play with Ping i3+ oversize irons.  I am looking to update my equipment with something as comparable to the i3+ as possible.  I currently play with Maroon Dot (5 degrees upright) 4-PW steel shafts with an added 1/2 inch of length.  I do need an upright club, but have corrected my swing enough to go to 3 degrees upright according to my static fitting.

I am also interested in upgrading my Hybrid club too.  I currently use a 21 degree Hogan 3 Hybrid with a Stiff True Temper Steel Shaft.  I would like to upgrade this as well.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If your handicap is a true 18.9, you would probably benefit from a full on fitting. Find out who in a reasonable distance from your area is really qualified to fit PING and go there, provided of course you want to stay with PING.

Since you like PING, I would probably look there first. Nothing wrong with a whole bag of PING, but you are not limited to that.

If you want to stay with a similar head size I would look at the TaylorMade SLDR irons or the PING i25 irons. Oversized irons are now much more "oversized" than they were when PING came out with the i3+ line.

actually for an 18 handicap, I would recommend the TM speed-blades rather than the SLDR iron, which has a much smaller head and tighter sweet spot

SLDR irons are a really good looking club with with clean lines and traditional offset and club head size.

I'd also throw in the JPX-EZ iron or the JPX-825 if you can find them still. Mizuno typically keeps with more traditional looking clubs. They still are pretty forgiving.

Yes but the SLDR irons are similar to his i3+ O-size irons. OP wanted something as close to those irons as possible.

@uvahoo72 if you want oversized irons then look at the G30, Speedblade or Callaway X2 Hot irons.

Is the "oversize" for ease of use or because he is a relatively larger person? Or both?

Size of the club head, larger club head.

SLDR are nice irons, just make sure you like the shiny chrome look before you buy them.  I think the Titleist AP1's are pretty comparable in head size to the SLDR as well.

This is all great information. I was looking at the Nike irons hard, but since no one has recommended them I will be hitting with all of these recommendations.

You should definately try the Nike irons. I had a fitting session and was hugely impressed by the covert 2 irons. But as you say, try as many different sets as it takes to find the right set that works for you. Regards Mailman

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
