Hello everyone

I have been a lurker here for some time. Sorry for just peaking!!

I live in Wisconsin and want to travel south only as far as I need to, to be able to golf the first of March or slightly earlier. Can I hear from ilinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee. Who has a home club that opens then or earlier? I am not looking for $100.00 a round courses. $35 ish is best. I am a 14HCP and so is my travel partner. We want the 18 hole course in your home town that has housing, nothing fancy. we want to show up on a Tuesday and golf that late afternoon, 36 weds and Thursday, then out on Friday morn.

We live in rural Wisconsin and our courses are as nice as possible, but no where near the real dandys. If yours is the likewise, that's what we want. I want to hop in the car, blast south and hit 100 holes and blast home. Gotta get my fix.

Hook me up. tell me your courses name so I can google.

Thanks all. I appreciate it. We are just starting to ice fish now and really would rather be golfing.

Welcome to the forum @Ollie .  We have a few Wisconsin forum members.  They may know have far you have to go!  I would guess Tennessee at least or maybe even further.

Maybe it was confusing how I asked. I really don't care to hear from Wisconsin people, I have to talk to them all the time. LOL I would like to hear from everyone down south as to what time of the year there home courses opens. Tennessee, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky. Do you golf all winter? Do you open in march, whats the gig. Tell me about your course.

I ask this because if you google golf vacations all you get is high priced accomodations and the best courses. I want the regular courses we all know and love. I belong to that "country club". There are thousands in the US and I intend to find these jewels for a march trip.

Do you have a small town and 3 courses in 30 miles to swing. A little hotel and a bar close. BINGO!!!! I want to hear from you.

Since you don't want to hear from fellow Wisconsites, I will skip the response on where we have driven to and keep the little gem a secret of our group from southern Wisconsin.... BTW..... welcome to the boards......

I think @sigfan2340 should let out the secret.  I was suggesting that others in your locale may know great places to go and could give you travel times, places to stay, etc.

I am sure that was just sarcasm, such as my own

Largo Florida has a few courses with a few bars close by that may be suitable that time of year. I know you're pretty well socked in with snow right about now. I'm playing tomorrow and it's only supposed to get up to 78 degrees.

You didn't mention the great state of Ohio, but I'll tell you anyway.

My home course, Kittyhawk GC in Dayton, is a muni and its open anytime the weather allows for it. Some years, I've been able to play multiple rounds in January. Definitely nothing fancy, but it would run you $20-30 depending on whether you take a cart. The city also runs courses known as Madden and Community and they are open year-round as well.

I'm in KY and it depends on the winter. It usually starts to warm up the end of feb or beginning of march. Most the courses are open all year here I think, I usually start playing end of march.

That's what I am talking about. Thanks for the spots guys. 12 hr drive or shorter, hopefully, is what we r looking for.

The last round we shot here was 32 degrees. slowcelica, do you have a name of a course I could look up?

Vangator, you are a bit far. I also just talked to another Floridian just moments ago, he was just heading to the course. I have to retire.

I mostly play the metro park courses but some nice public courses in the $30-$50 range are Quail Chase, Heritage Hill, Glenmary Country Club.

You might try St. Louis area in early March. Main thing you have to contend with is overnight frost. If ground is frozen at dawn, most courses won't let people tee off until mid-morning when frost has burnt off. On frozen ground, the irons and wedge shots shatter the grass roots and leave ugly gouges in the turf.

As for greens fees, expect to pay at least $50 for the morning round, if you want to get in 36 holes. You might find some afternoon rate cuts.

I play at Stonewolf G.C., a rather tricky Jack Nicklaus sig course in IL near St. Louis.

WGM manages Stonewolf and a dozen or so other course in the region. Check out the Walters' site to explore opportunities. http://wgmgolf.com/

Note : If you schedule Stonewolf and come down, send me a PM and my playing partner and I possibly could fill out the foursome for you. (Believe me, you want a tour guide for the first trip.)

Focus, connect and follow through!

Thanks for all the hints guys. Any others? Love hearing about your local courses.

My membership is at the weymont country club in Weyauwega wi. we have about 8 open to the public courses with in 30 mins of us. Most are in the rolling areas of this state. Not quite mountains but nice courses that challenge us bogey, or so ;)  golfers

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
