I'm as cheap as they come, but I'd pay the extra to get fitted and buy them from a brick and mortar shop. I wouldn't want to run the risk of getting fake clubs. Don't buy them from some kid that was hired off the street to sell clubs either. Find a place that will fit you professionally. Maybe your local golf pro shop. You'll have them quite a while (unless you're a club ho), so the extra spread out is only pennies more per use. I'm a club building ho. :-)

At your level I totally understand getting fit but at mine I don't see it being all that important. I don't hit the ball out of the center of the club nearly enough to notice 1 or 2 degrees of lie angle one way or another. Besides tee boxes I don't get to many perfect lies anyway so how much will that help me? When I get a more solid game I'll definitely get fit until then I'm just going to work on having a better more consistent swing.

2 degrees of lie angle can cause you to hit toe first or heel first which can cause the club to turn more than you like as you come down on the ball. I didn't think it would help either, and was surprised that it did.

Well hitting it a half inch out on the toe isn't going to be fixed by a 2 degree change in lie angle.

I think there will be less of an effect with center face shots.

I seem to remember at the local Golf Galaxy that they'll fit you for free with the purchase of new irons.  Is that not the norm?

Are you getting a huge price break from the internet that it makes sense not to spend money at a retail outlet and get fit?

Yes, but generally for shaft stiffness, length and grip.

The lie angle is not easy to do with a lot of cast clubs except at the factory. I am guessing that they use a really strong machine that somehow does not work harden*** the material. In some cases, they have different heads cast in 2 degree increments, and you would special order them.

***This is an undesirable process where it weakens the metal by "working it" beyond the standard stress levels.

Ahh.

I was speaking with the pro at Golf Galaxy and we were discussing Ping irons and he said that they do the fittings and that one gets the clubs a few weeks later once Ping makes the changes to the clubs per the fitting.

I thought that's how it was no matter where you went or which clubs you got.

TM and Callaway also do this, and it takes a couple/three weeks as well. The only issue I see is getting the fitting done with the same heads. This is why I like forged clubs, because the fitter can change the lie angles while you are being fitted. You can immediately take them out on the course after the fitting.

A righty will have a lot easier time finding a forged game improvement club. The one I am eying is the Mizuno JPX-850 Forged. http://www.mizunousa.com/golf/products/jpx-850-forged-irons#.VIeXqslke5I. The handicap range is a little misleading. Many reviewers stated that higher handicaps can also use it. http://thesandtrap.com/t/76581/new-mizuno-jpx-850-irons
I ended up picking up some callaway x2 hot pro irons. I got them on ebay for a real good price. I absolutely love them. They look a lot more traditional but they still have good forgiveness on off center hits. I hit my pings real high (that's what they are supposed to do) but I like my ball flight a lot more with the callaways. It's a lot lower. I actually gained about 15 yards per iron and they are the exact same loft as the pings. I think I was ballooning the pings a bit probably getting to much spin and launch. I am not very good with my 4
I often wondered about buying irons on the internet.  Can those still be fitted regardless if they are cast or forged?

yes. Fitting is primarily trigonometry, which has a lot to do with rocket science, but the fellows on this site are the BOMB at that stuff.

With PING, if you order the clubs on Monday, you typically get them on Friday. Other OEM's are similar, sometimes it may take longer if you order a shaft they don't have in stock.

Speaking of Ping the G30 look really good. Even Mark Crossfield thinks they're good. :-)

Yeah, I liked them as well. They just don't advertise them like Taylormade or Callaway.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
