OK, so there is a HUGE problem with our golf team this year. Our coaches are complete idiots who play who they like and not who deserves it. There is one person who is a complete dick to every one on the team, even the upperclassmen and I am getting screwed at every corner.

First of all, our coaches. Last week they played a person who they promised a spot instead of me, who really earned it. It turns out that the person who they played shot a 91 and I shot a 78. When I went to the coaches, they were like, "Good job. I knew we should of played you". Its like duh but you didn't so it really doesn't make a difference. And now, this week I shot two worse as the person who is playing number 6 and I didn't even make varsity. I asked the coaches for their reasoning and they just told me to 'stay strong'. Please also note that these bozos are not actually skilled in golfing. They are a history teacher and a Spanish teacher. Oh and they SUCK at golf.

Ok, now my rant on this total dick. He is the one who is playing number 6 next tournament. Kids who have played with him say that he is a complete cheater. He improves his lie in the rough and shaves shots when his holds the scorecard. He also laughs at other people when they three putt, hit bad shots, etc. He used to be my best friend until I found out that he was telling all of my close friends that he was ten times better at golf than me when even his coach tells me that I am better. What should I do? Is it appropriate to punch him out?

Oh and his name is Jack Burrus just in case anyone wants to send a hitman to kill him....

I *really* need some help guys.

Even though they are not good golfers, they may know a thing or two about running a winning team. Look at some NBA coaches.

What does the rest of the team think about the situation? Have you talked to them individually? And they have the same conclusion in their mind? If that's the case, talk them all into quiting, see if you can form your own team somehow with a teacher everyone trusts? May be a total longshot, but who knows.

If you approached your coaches as a grown up and told them that you would like to discuss your recent play, Im sure they would oblige. Ive seen the same situation get ugly when parents get involved. State your case and tell them the truth. Do not mention anything about rumors of cheating from your fellow teammate. You can only control you. Even if they dont put you into the top 5, I promise they will respect you more.

Are you in high school? What year are you? I would encourage you to focus on improving your game; Use these other things as fuel to get better. You might talk with the coach and ask what can I do to get a playing spot.
It sounds really frustrating, but don't even think about quitting. If the coaches continually sabotage the team, you might eventually need to go over their heads to the athletic director. I wouldn't advise that until you have done everything you can to work with the coaches to improve the situation.

First of all, Relax!!! And congratulations on your Handicap!!!! That's an achievement.

Now, some other advice from an "old" duffer....

1. Don't let this punk get to you.
2. Follow earlier advice, let it fuel you to practice and get better.
3. Keep playing an honest game and maintain your composure (that means relax).
4. Don't let this kid get to you.
5. You should go to the coaches, calmly, and ask them why you're not playing and what you need to do to start playing. Remember, be calm and don't pout or whine. If you have specific goals, and meet them, then that puts the coaches in a situation where they need to play you, or have a good reason why not.

Finally, this kid's mouth and cheating will catch up to him....its called Karma, and it means you get what you deserve....so, play hard and fair and you'll be fine!

Hang in there!

You will learn quickly in life that you cannot control others. Are the coaches making bad decisions. Sounds like probably, but you have zero control of that. If that kid is cheating in HS golf, he WILL get caught. I caught three kids when I was in HS, he will get his. Try some of the stuff mentioned above on dealing with your coaches. If they plain and simple won't give you straight answers or give you an explanation of why you are not playing, then I would consider other actions. Otherwise, after he shoots 91, 95, 97 in the next three tourneys and you fire under 80, your case can be made solidly to your coaches. IF THEY STILL DON'T give you a shot, I would speak with the AD.

iacas is on track with the maturing thing. As Tiger Woods says, "W's take care of everything" That statement really applies to you here. I'm sure your coaches noticed your 78 compared to the other guys 91. Maybe your attitude is coming across as being a whiner. Who knows.
Bottom line on this one is you will be much further ahead if you completely focus on practicing and don't give one thought to who will be chosen. The focus you give to practice will show in your game improving which will help you achieve lower scores which will get you on the team regularly. Even if the guys don't know much about golf they know that low scores will help your team win.
Now go out and practice your OWN game and forget about the other guys and the coaches. Find a way to shave a stroke or two off every round. Even if you are grinding for every stroke now, grind harder, never give up on any hole. It'll pay off.

Maturity, tactfulness and patience will carry you a long ways in life. Listen to the great advice given here, most of us older guys have been through some of the things you are experiencing now. Your clubs should do the talking, if that doesn't work, then this is probably the wrong team for you.

For anything worth having one must pay the price; and the price is always work, patience, love, and self-sacrifice.

Thanks guys and I'm sorry about some of the rash comments that I made. I'm going in tommorow to ask the coaches some things (also, my date to homecomming!) and hopefully that will resolve some things.

Now that I have calmed down (I was pretty pissed last night. Ok really pissed) I can reflect and now I know that I made a mistake and should have taken a more respectable course of action. Thanks alot.

I'd worry more about the prom date than the cheating golfer!!! Just kidding!

Good luck with both and keep practicing!!

Umm I would like to weigh in on this comment. I have been married for 10 years...... my wife officially became less fun than golf 9 years ago. You need to edit your reply to say girls are more fun until you marry them!

And how would you know about shooting 58? My thoughts on that are shooting 58 only happens once and to very few people. I can find a girl whenever I want!

I was, BY NO MEANS, implying I will, could, have, ever might, shoot 58. You can find a girl, but how about putting yourself in his shoes. In high school, getting a beautiful, fun homecoming date should be just as fun if you know what you are doing.

And NM Golf - sorry to strike the wrong cord, but, to me, my best feeling in golf was shooting 65 (that's when I was a 4 BTW), and to "be" with the girl I love (see avatar) is a millions times better. I can't think a 58 would make up the difference Just my 2 cents.

you're not his friend anymore after being his best friend because he told your friends he was a better golfer than you?

.....

Youll soon learn (hopefully) to not care about things like that (especially sports related) and youll be a better person for it.

    • In the old days, pre-2020, "playing to your handicap" meant a net score about equal to the Course Rating.  that led to problems when people played against each other from different tees, people playing tees with a lower CR would generally shoot lower scores.  Course Handicaps were adjusted for each competition to make it even, usually lowering the course handicap for the "forward tee" players. So now if you "play to your handicap", the (68.4-72) term means your score will be even par, no matter which tees you play from.  No adjustment needed for people playing from different tees.  Look at your example, the guy shoots 82 every time, his Course Handicap of 10 gives him an even par net score every time.
