replace pitching wedge with a 48deg vokey?

hi guys,

somehow i'm having a lot of trouble consistently hitting a pitching wedge really flush--usually i end up pull-hooking the stupid thing, however, i can usually hit my 52 degree wedge with a really high arc and soft landing, same as my 56 and 60 degree wedges, all of which are vokeys.

my irons are callaway big berthas (2006 model) which have a really huge cavity-back and basically look almost identical from 4 iron through the pitching wedge.

i'm considering substituting the callaway pitching wedge that came with my set and trying the 48 degree vokey wedge as a replacement.

does any one have any comments or opinions?

please note that comments like "don't pull hook your pitching wedge" will be met with a face dunk in a bunker .

What's the loft on your current PW? You run the risk of having a big gap between your 9-Iron and PW if you do this. My PW, for instance, is 46 degrees. If I were to swap it out for a 48-Vokey, I'd have a 6-degree gap between 9 and PW (as opposed to a 6-degree gap between PW and GW at the moment).

There is no question in my mind. Go with the Vokey and check the lofts.

That was exactly my intention a couple of weeks ago but I was concerned about the 48 vs 46 difference. Then I found that TGW had the

Feel Golf PW on sale for $50 so I got their 46 and have used it my last couple of outings. I have to say I like the new PW better than then my set's PW; better control and the Feel version as a lower bounce angle which I've always preferred. Hope that helps.

If your hooking a wedge then I would bet your your club head is getting ahead your hands. Check your setup and grip and ball postion, with as much spin a wedge produces something is wrong and buying a new club will not fix it..

Go for it. When I got my new set last year (I got ProCombo Tour forged irons) I traded the PW for a 2I and got a 48* Cleveland CG10 (I use the CG 10's for my lob and sand wedge). It's been great for me. Make sure to check the lofts though... I had to get my whole iron set bent 1* weak to compensate for having the 48* PW now instead of 49*.

i went ahead and ordered the 48 with the 30 day playability guarantee from TGW.

while i definitely understand that my hands are coming in too fast or i'm closing the clubface (i.e. technique), i don't have that problem when I'm hitting a 9 iron 150 yards or dropping a nice 52 degree gap wedge onto the green. i think there's something about the look or the length of the club at address that doesn't feel the same as my vokeys, and thus alters something in my dern swing.

the way i see it hitting a 48 degree shot a bit short leaves me in a better scoring position than if i pull hook my standard kit's pitching wedge 20 yards left.

Not trying to pick on you but your logic doesn't really told up here - if the 9 iron and the wedge look the same, play the same, and are from the same set then if it's an equipment issue it seem you would have the same issue with your 9 iron...

Your wedge is in your head and has you psyched out - I understand, my driver is my nemesis but it doesn't help if I get a different driver and swing it the same way.

This thread just made me think about my current pw, though i like it pretty good, most of the time. Hadnt thought of replacing it with another one but might look into that in the future as I use my pw unlike my other irons, i use it for most every shot 100 and in as I dont hit a sw very well, just vary how hard i hit my pw and try to use feel to get the right distance.

Best specs I can get for Big Bertha irons are from 2008:
9 iron = 41º | PW = 45º

Assuming lofts are the same for 2006, you would have a 7º gap between your BB 9i and the VoPW. Despite the degree gap, distance difference may not bust your yardstick. BB head is designed to really get the ball up, and the Vokey clubhead likely would hit the ball lower and nearly as long as the 45º BB. You would just have to test it out.

BB is advertised as a "maximum forgiveness" club, so expect to sacrifice some finesse with the BB PW.

Go to a club fitter, tell him your shaft and sole grind for your current Vokeys, and see what he says. Best way: If a friend has a comparable Vokey 48º, borrow it for a test vs. the BB 45º.

vokeys are great wedges. why not get it and leave the pw out of the bag. also are your clubs fitted? That could be a huge factor as to why why your having trouble as well. instead of just getting the vokey try and see if the clubs you have are a proper fit.

I did for awhile. I used a 48 vokey bent to 47 degrees. The real advantage to it is that chips and pitches are a little easier with a wedge style of club than a cav back PW. You get a little more mass were you need it. Once i started gaming AP2's i switched back to a traditional set up.

Question. I also use Big bertha irons for their "forgiveness" and I rescently left my PW somewhere and am in search of a new one or a replacement wedge of sorts... The vokey wedges are they "forgiving"

Great clubs-I use a Vokey 52* gap wedge, but not forgiving. I'd try to find a PW with a cavity back and more degrees of bounce than a Vokey 48*.
