Ok, so I'm dying to get this sorted out so I looked at some flipping videos online and saw one that talked about rotating the forearms through impact so as to get the feeling that the right pinky was rotating UP through impact (I swing right handed).  I went to the range during lunch and I have NEVER I mean NEVER compressed the ball the way I did trying this.  I also find myself facing the target at finish when doing this.  Will let you know where this takes me.  I chipped doing it also and chipped GREAT.  I guess I was releasing the club instead of flipping it.

Dude.. pinky? Dont be offended, but these posts should probably be moved to the fliping thread. There is no good way to resource or search them later unless the mods move them.

The pinky moving UP shows you how the forearms should rotate through the downswing.  I'll find a message board with less anal-retananot jerks.  Please delete me completely from this forum.  Thanks.

I just never heard about a pinky being used for a point of interest. Perhaps its whatever works or sparks your awareness. Personally, I think if you are doing it right, everything in the grip becomes a simple hinge and you move on into the shot where the important stuff happens. If you are into pinkies I think you should stick around. You will find that level of detail and more here.

Bummer for you. This is the best site around and if you had taken a minute to look around you would have seen all the free good info you could have gotten. Good luck rolling your forearms over. Your loss. Not ours.

I go through a series of thought like everyone else but it seems the one that gets me in trouble most is the head movement.

I know just what it was every time I top the ball or hit it thin.

Maybe just concentrating on that one issue is the key.

Jack Nicklaus said it best:
Steady and behind the ball: Every golfer should understand that golf is a game of balance, rhythm and timing. You have to swing the club. To do that, your body must be in position, beginning with your head, which needs to start behind the ball and stay there all the way through impact.

Thank you dfreuter415, like I said, I know just what it was every time I hit a bad shot.

It is something so simple but so easy to forget when I need it most.

I sometimes think I need some sort of heads-up display or something.

I would like one myself. Or just a self kicking butt boot. On the 18th fairway on Sunday, my partner and I had bombed past the other two guys, but at the price of being on the left edge of the fairway, which tilts right to left. This left both of us with a ball above the feet lie, though the balls were well exposed and suggested fairway woods on the par 5. If I had any awareness, I should have attempted the fade swing to counter the natural hook lie. Did I? Hell no. Result? Pw pitch to the green from under some trees left resulting from the hook. Overlong past the hole and a nasty putt back. Partner hooked the second shot also.

FWIW I hate "behind the ball." My head is not behind the ball with wedges, or a 9I per se because the ball is in the middle or very near to the middle of my stance… where my head is.

For all other clubs (on normal shots) it's forward of center and thus, if my head is in the center and stays there, it's "behind" the ball, but… I didn't have to do anything to achieve that. Saying "keep your head behind the ball" leads to more problems than it fixes. Heck, I'd rather see the average amateur with his head slightly in front of the ball than behind it.

There's also a lot more to it than just saying "keep your head behind the ball." You have to know HOW to do it.

Yes because if you just try to "keep your head behind the ball", you could end up looking like this......

Instead of this.

The swing thought i use is "belt buckle to target" as i have a tendancy to under rotate or even just straighten the lead leg leaving too much weight back. Happened yesterday at the range when i noticed all my iron shots were going sky high and starting right.

Wasnt till i got home and and rehearsed in slo mo getting my belt facing the target and without that noticed the huge difference. As soon as i had a swing in the garden and tried full swing the difference in clubhead speed felt huge.

I wouldnt like to use anything more technical as a swing thought myself but this really helps me to get the hips moving

It's maniacal how many swing thoughts a person learning the game goes through, it must be nice when many of them become second nature.

Lately I've been changing my swing thoughts based on how my swing feels on that particular day. Some days I have to remind myself to be more on plane, other days it just happens and I can think about something else. I still will only think about one or two things. On the days when I'm hitting real well, I'm usually just thinking about one thing...the rest just happens naturally.

Edit: I also have different swing thoughts for different clubs, PW is different than driver. I have to remind myself to come on plane w/ a 5iron. Don't have to do it with a 7i.
