Hi everyone! I'm new here and have been lurking for about a month. Love the site. I had a question. Been playing about a year and still figuring my swing out. I've had a lot of help and think I found a good swing. It looks decent on video and it shows good results occasionally. It seems more like a golf swing, than what I've been doing. I've heard that during a swing change, sometimes you shouldn't expect great results at first. I played 18 today. I threw away my score card after 3 holes. I didn't want to get distracted by focusing on scoring well. I played many second shots and made sure to keep my swing consistent to my new change. I had a lot of encouraging results, and some bad ones. But I feel good about it cause I feel like I'm "doing it right." I realize there are many different ways to skin a cat but this new swing seems more fundamentally sound. Swing is more on plane, right elbow is a bit tighter, etc. Is it normal to get mixed results during a swing change?

Yes it is normal. I takes a while for the changes to become permanent and even then, you still have to work at it.

I would advice posting video of your swing in the Member Swings section.  There you can track your improvement.

Yes, I'm going through a swing change and feel the same way.  The key is if you believe the swing change is beneficial you have to stick with it even if it feels uncomfortable.

If it's not uncomfortable you probably haven't changed anything. As far as results generally when making a change my good shots are better and my bad shots are worse. I've found it takes at least 3 weeks for a change to become ingrained enough that it happens unconsciously...

I have been spending the last two months getting comfortable with this new swing of mine, and my scores are terrible. The only reason why I stuck with it is that I hit way farther than I have ever imagined without injuring myself. It is obviously a more natural swing for me, but I was just not used to it.

I decided to go see a PGA Professional the middle of last summer after being sick of fading/slicing everything.  It wasn't a terrible ball flight, but I wanted to draw the ball to get more distance.  It was hard to stick with it, but I figured I payed the money so I might as well stick it out and see where it gets me.  I went from shooting 75-78 to shooting a couple rounds of 85-86-96, and these were in tournaments.  I was so frustrated I almost went back to the old way, but I was drawing the ball nicely and stuck with it.  My last 5 rounds of the year were 9 hole rounds since in North Dakota it gets dark at just after 6 in the fall went 36-33-32-32-35 on a par 36.  Just hit balls on the range today for the first time this year and my ball flight is a draw, and I can now work it both ways, excited for the season to start.  So to make a long story short I would say to stick with it, it will get better, it just takes time and range balls.

If it is major it takes me about 3 months to internalize a change to the point of owning it.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
