I am having some issues with my full swing wedges. I Was outside practicing yesterday... and swinging a 56° and tried some full shots, I was shanking the hell out of some of them, the others were a little push... I was hitting longer clubs as well (don't worry I have those almost balls that don't hurt anything)... and those I was hitting fine... It doesn't feel like I'm coming over the top, and I don't think I'm standing too close to the ball... my head was steady, I was gettin my weight shifted, so I'm thinking I'm either not having an inline impact, or I'm too steep and not swinging up the roof... Help!!!!!

You could be doing what I was, and that is, coming to far inside on the back swing, so you reroute and wind up swinging more to the outside, or you  come over the top. I want to see that my shaft, when it's parallel to the ground, is pointing at my target, and parallel to my hips, ect..before I would have the butt of the shaft pointing WAY right (righty) and was causing me fits. Also, This happened when I get to steep, I have to feel like I'm laying off..alot..Hope that might help some.

Even if you have a friend record a 30 second video with a cell phone camera it is better than nothing.

You could simply be standing too close to the ball.

Julia, how would I determine if I am standing too close to the ball... I've done the drill where you start with the club in front of you parallel to the ground, and lowered to club to the ground by bending at the waist then the knees and it seems fine

You said you were shanking your wedges. Wedges are the shortest clubs in the bag. You're making your most vertical swing. If you normally take an inside out path you'll stand a good chance of hitting on the inside of the clubface with a wedge. If you're standing a little too close you'll hit the hosel. You're hitting a draw bias wedge shot. If you want to hit this type of a shot you'll probably need to step a little further away from the ball. Take your normal address. Step back about 1/2". Then if that doesn't quite work, step back a full inch. If that works, just try to remember that feel, and repeat. That's what I learned to do when I have to hit my 56 from 80 yds.

I have an inside-out swing path and if I'm off just a little in where I'm standing, I can send that ball rightward into the next fairway.

Normally with my 60 and 56, I play with an open stance to promote an outside > in swing path to produce a soft shot with more backspin.

So stand a smidge further back, or open my stance a little?

Opening the stance is the better option in my opinion.

Tried both schools of thought @SavvySwede and @DrvFrShow with my wedges... you were both correct, I tried standing back a smidgen, got rid of the shanks completely, had a little bit of a block still, so I opened my stance a little and it produced a nice two yard fade back to target... thanks you two...

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
