I saw the Payne Stewart 15th anniversary special on his death on Golf Channel the other day.    He was one of my favorite players and I enjoyed seeing his "knicker" outfits.    Time has gone by so fast.     A damn shame that faulty maintenance on the aircraft caused the death of all the passengers on that flight.

i too, watched it on TGC, and thought it was done very well..   i can still remember the day it happened cuz it was on the day of my bowling league, and almost everyone on said league golfed, so everyone was talking about it..

i even remember my step father telling me the navy or air force sent up a couple jets to check out the plane and to possibly tip it off course if it happened to nearing a city near the end, so it wouldnt crash into a highly populated area..

when i was watching it, i honestly wonder how Payne would have done for a career, cuz he was still playing at the top of his game..

It is what it is

I hadn't thought about Payne much lately which is a shame. He was a good guy, a character which the dull PGA has badly needed and of course a great player. He died around the peak of his career and we lost out on seeing him possibly win another major or more at a time when Tiger was becoming dominant.

We stoped at Pinehurst on the way home from Myrtle Beach, and there is a large Payne Stewart presence there. There is a statue behind the 18th green, the sleeves he cut off his jacket, along wih the scissors, are framed in the learning center, and there are a lot of pictures in the hall leading to the pro shop.

Before that day with the sleeves cut out of his rain jacket...I don't ever remember seeing a short sleeve rain jacket or a rain vest.  Now, I own both.  Knowing it or not...Payne was definitely a trendsetter.
