I've been Playing Golf for: 1.5 seriously

My current handicap index or average score is: Average score 115

My typical ball flight is: push right

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Fat\Thin shots - would like more distance

I'll work on getting better videos up soon, but hopefully this work for now.

I had been pushing right on most shots, but have been getting better at squaring up at impact. I know I need to work on getting my hands in front of the ball at impact and learning to cover the ball. I'm very much a sweeper, my distances are very short. My typical 7 iron shot is about 125.

Thanks for posting @Tangy Zizzle .

It is tough to tell from that angle, but you appear to have a very steep downswing and this may be because your shoulders are very flat with respect to the ground and rotation.

I would check out this thread then post a face on video and a video that is aiming down the line where your feet are pointed.  Have the camera around waist height for each.

Getting to the right position in the backswing will help the downswing.

Few things I notice which no doubt contribute to inconsistent ball striking.

1) Sort your posture and address out - you're too much 'sat back' in your heels and slumped in the upper back. Try having a touch less knee flex,  your back less rounded and lean forward by hinging from your hips, not your mid back. A good image is to imagine you're on the edge of a pool about to dive in. This should move your weight more towards the balls of your feet and away from your heels.

2) Rotate around your spine - your swing is all arms and elbows. One reason you lack power is because you're not using your body rotation to create clubhead speed. You basically pick the club up on the backswing and barely rotate your shoulders at all. This causes you to lose your spine angle and stand up away from the ball, which is never good for consistent ball striking. The bend in the left arm at the top also indicates restricted shoulder turn. Try feeling like your arms and hands are more passive and that you're using your trunk to rotate about your spine. A good drill may be to stick a towel under your armpits and try and maintain pressure against them with your arms throughout backswing. This will keep them more connected and in sync with your torso and also force you to rotate your upper body more and stop over swinging.

3) Dont try to help the ball get airbourne - you have the classic 'flippy' wrists at impact which is again another recipe for ball striking disaster! Your hands should be ahead of the ball at impact with the irons, not on top of or behind. Work on keeping your hands ahead of the ball at impact and hitting slightly down on the ball to compress it. Don't overdo this by going to steep into the ball, just focus on the club bottoming out AFTER hitting the ball and taking a nice shallow divot.

I think those 3 things should be your main focus. They're essentially fundamentals and once you get those right golf becomes a lot easier. I cant really tell from that video but it also looks like your grip is an issue i.e. too much in the palm of your left hand creating a 'weak' grip.

So my advice for a relative beginner like you is focus on your grip, posture, setup and ball position the most right now. In other words get all the stuff before you hit the ball correct and thats half the battle won already. Then make sure you know how you want to be hitting the ball with the club your holding e.g. slightly up with the driver, flat with the woods and long irons and down with mid to short irons. I've found with most beginners simply having them understand how they ought to be hitting the ball (in regards to angle of attack at least) makes a huge difference to their game and fixes a lot of faults with their swing automatically.

Also, GET LESSONS!

Thanks for the advice everyone, I know I have a long way to go. I actually have had a couple lessons, but it seemed like they didn't touch on too much in hopes I'd come back for more lessons.

Here are a couple better videos from today.

I'll just add this to what these guys said. Shoulders turn too level to the ground, head moves up and to the right, making it harder to achieve solid contact.

  • 1 year later...

Alright, it's been a year and I've made a little progress. Still haven't broken 100, but did shoot a 101 on Friday. I'm not pushing the ball like last year but I'm still inconsistent. Here is my 7 iron again.

A few things

1. Tilt your head down at address more. It might feel like your chin is against your chest.

2. Your head moves way too much, and you sway a lot on the back swing.  You basically start to stand up in the backswing. Getting your posture better will help this. I would check out this thread.

    • Day 211 (29 Nov 24) - Friday men’s round albeit a solo foursome (temps in the 40’s, day after Thanksgiving and the average age closer to 75 - I’m a youngster at 65).  Interesting day of semi-solid play (8 of 18 GIR). Hit all four par threes in one (a first) - parred each; still had a couple 3 putt bogies; and blew up on 3 of the par 5’s (go figure)). The blow ups were some serious tree rattlers - amplifying how I got stupid and greedy instead of smart and content to just get back in the short stuff.
    • Day 60 - 2024-11-29 Got about 3.5' of snow today, so I was going to go to Golf Evolution, but… I only left the house to throw some snow. Instead, i checked out my putting stroke on HackMotion in the basement. Turns out… it's pretty good, and I'm very in touch with what I'm doing.

After 4 worlds I run out of worlds that have the letters I've already found that can be combined with the remaining letters.. just repeated the 4th world to knew the answer. I know the world but it never came to my mind.
