Looks like it's going to be just a wee bit warm out there in sunny California. We get to watch yet another USGA event and Fox try and tune its broadcast. It's a well worn saying that amateurs should look more to LPGA swings for learning purposes. What about swings of a certain age?

US Senior Open Should Be a Scorcher in Sacramento [NYT]

Quote:
There are 28 past USGA champions, 27 amateurs and 84 sectional qualifiers among the field of 156. That includes three-time U.S. Open winner Hale Irwin and players such as Miguel Angel Jimenez and Kenny Perry who have contended in majors on the PGA Tour in recent years. It does not include Fred Couples; the 1992 Masters champion withdrew because of a back injury.

The nearly 7,000-yard, par-70 course has some unleveled lies but is about as straightforward as California courses come. The trick is to stay out of the long, lush rough and control the speed on the fast fairways and fickle greens — all of which will be tougher as the temperature rises and the competition heats up.

Yeah, 100's most each day. Sacramento is a dry heat so it isn't too bad. I have never heard of this course before so I am interested to see how it plays.

The Director of Golf from my home course is playing in this.   I am looking forward to seeing him do well.

I live two miles from Del Paso CC.  It is certainly hot today with a forecasted high of 103.  Currently my thermometer says it's 95 degrees at 12:55.  The high is supposed to be a degree cooler tomorrow (when I'm going).  The Delta breeze is forecast for Saturday and Sunday.  That's when we get low 90s, which is not bad at all.

I played near the Delta yesterday at 11:00am, and it was 95 when we finished.  Yes, it was warm but not horrible.  Like mchepp said, there's less humidity than in some parts of the country, but the golf courses tend to be humid micro-climates, especially in the Valley.  I really don't like walking when the temps hit 98.  Really hard to stay hydrated.

I already LOVE the course! Looks like a true test of American golf again.

Watson is just amazing to watch. Swing has changed very little over all these years. He will be hard to beat.

Noticed a "few" changes in the coverage. Showing a lot more action, and less chatter. Still not a fan of the after round assessment, but maybe it will get better. The host is a welcome change, he will do well.

Looking forward to a great week of US Senior Open play. The temperature will be a factor, but I am sure these guys will do whatever necessary to beat the heat.

Lots of great names playing.

This is a course I would love to play. Well done USGA!!!!!!

You know, if FOX had a Miguel Angel Jimenez-cam, I would watch the U.S Senior Open. But they do not, so I will not be watching.

I remember that when I was working in Sacramento in 1983.  The plant had signs everywhere that said, "Drink Water".  In a dry heat, you don't feel the sweat.  Some of these old guys are going to suffer.

An honest question: Shouldn't Miguel Angel Jimenez be KILLING these guys?! Jimenez routinely competes on the European Tour, I guarantee almost none of these old dudes would even make a cut in a Euro Tour event.

Many of these old dudes won many majors.  As much as I like MAJ, he has not.

Fox coverage good so far. Haven't lost a single ball in the sky. ;) Also, Grant Waite playing well and sitting among the leaders after two rounds. :)

Don't watch much Senior Tour but I enjoyed this one.  Was fascinated to see that for most of the day the leaderboard was Maggert, Montgomerie, and Langer, and then they showed a graphic with the winners of the past 7 (NOT counting today) Senior Tour majors ... all of which have been won by either Maggert (1, now 2), Montgomerie (3), or Langer (3).

Guess that's your Big 3 for now.

Agree that it was nice to see Grant Waite do well. :)  (The only player in the field with all 4 rounds in the 60's)

Sad that USGA double feature is over, looked like a photo finish until Maggert caught fire. Waite had to qualify for the USO and barely made it I think. Looks like there should be less pressure on him to retain his playing privileges for next year. Top 3 in driving distance in the senior tour, ~295+. Geezers can still put some hurt on the ball.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
