Any good tips on fixing a sway in the backswing? Also, I am a rightie and my right toes come off the ground. How do I stay grounded in the backswing? SG

Stand with your foot against a wall. Note the space you have there. Make a turn that increases the space between your hips and the wall.

Thanks, man. Any idea why my right toe go up in the backswing ? Part of the sway issue?

Yes it's probably a result of the sway or not turning your right foot out. Does it happen when you do the wall drill?

It doesn't happen with the wall drill. Although, it feels weird after swaying, need to stay with that drill. Thx!

Yeah do that drill and note what you feel to accomplish it. Then take that feel to the range.

You could also do it in front of a mirror. Put a chair next to your right hip or a piece of tape on the mirror and pivot so that you create some space between the chair/piece of tape. Same idea, how does it feel and then do that on the range.

you sway because you got the basics wrong. when you swing a club you have to think of your torso and hips as a SCREW. they are turning around the axis that is your spine, like a corkscrew going into a cork. think of this as you make some practice backswings, even without a club. The sway will be gone.

I've seen a drill where you put a golf ball under the outside of your back foot.  It will be really tough to sway back.

I think that's a drill you have to be careful of. The position of the ball will kick in the right knee and can make it difficult for it to decrease in flex.

The thing that helped me with this is Jack Nicklaus's description of the back of your neck being "anchored". In other words, the back of your neck does not move during the backswing. I found this to be an easy feeling to remain aware of. Stopped my swaying. :-)

What's wrong with a bit of sway in the backswing? Many top pros do and hit the ball very well.

There's nothing really "wrong" with it, but it makes everything else harder without any real benefit.

Welcome to the site but that's incorrect. Check out these pics and this thread. Most pros create a "gap" or some space with their trail hip from address to the top of the backswing.

So you're saying they make a reverse sway?

I'm saying they make a centered turn. The trail hip pocket moves to the center line (green line). More info on that thread I posted, make sure to give that a look.

Look at the way the hips work in this video of Hunter Mahan.
