Today I went to my local golf shop to try some irons.  I wanted to see if I was able to hit a higher skilled iron.  I tested the ap1/ap2.  I feel so-so about my current irons so I'm thinking about upgrading my current clubs.  I currently have the JPX-EZ with KBS tour shafts.

I hit 20 shots with the AP2's and a couple shots with the AP1's.  I was able to hit the ap2 about as far as my JPX-ez's.  The JPX-Ez should have a greater carry distance right?

I really enjoyed hitting the ap2's/ap1's.  I was surprised with how well I was hitting them.  Has any high handicappers used these clubs?  How did you like them?

The pro I've gotten lessons from suggested I try the Ping i25.  Has anyone tried these?

I'm going to go back to my golf shop this weekend to try more clubs.  What other clubs should I try?

The new AP1 716 will be out in a couple months and they're solid, similar looking to the 714 AP1's but longer/more forgiving/better loft gapping.

The new PING i E1 irons (ones that replaced the i25's) are also really good.

I had the original AP1s for years and ball striking improved when I moved away from them.

A friend of mine with a similiar handicap went out this weekend determined to buy some new pings and ended up with the Callaway XRs after testing several sets of clubs.

Below is the JPX-850 Review.

I play these and the AP2. The JPX are a bit more forgiving and will launch slightly higher. I don't see much of a distance difference. The JPX will be a bit better with ground contact when you are slightly fat too. The sole is wider than the AP1 or 2.

Honestly you cant go wrong with the AP1's. I have been playing my Original 2008 AP1's for 7 years now and still love them. I have hit all the new model of AP1's over the years and still cant tell any major difference other than the looks. The AP2's are really nice too, I had a set of the 712's but I ended up selling them. You have to be a solid ball striker to hit the AP2's constantly and I just dont have the time to go to the range every day. The AP1's are Titleist game improvement irons and are best suited for higher handicaps. But as a low single digit handicap,  I can tell you the AP1's are still a very good option!

Have they gone public with the specs?

Can't get into details until a month from now (or something close to that).

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
