So I just got back into the game this year after a 10 yr hiatus do to my kids sports. Now that I am back into it, I am loving it more than previously when I played and I didn't think that was possible. Maybe because, my son (now 20) is super into golf now and we are doing it together instead of me just sitting on the sidelines watching him race MX or play Travel Baseball.

So anyway, I just bought a new driver after testing out everyone that was available to me and I kept going back to the Ping G30 which is what I ended up purchasing. I absolutely love it. What I need help with is, before I retired the first time from playing lol, with all the new technology, and being able to adjust the driver's loft and so forth, wondering what might be the best setting? Or what is better I guess is the right question, lower loft or more loft? I got the 10.5, so I think I can take it down to 9.5 or take it up to 11.5. What does having more or less loft do? Does one create more spin/side spin? I am 45, and my body has been through hell with my occupation so I cant drive the ball like I could in the past obviously. I have been struggling with drawing the ball hard almost to the point of a snap hook. So any help on trying to set this driver up best for me would be appreciated. Thanks for everyones time.

Go to the range and try all three settings. That's the only way to know for sure.

I plan on doing that Rip. But I guess what I'm also trying to find out is, does having a lower loft or higher loft have an affect on spin? More side spin especially for slicing the ball or hooking the ball. Do you have better control with more loft or less loft with a driver?

Generally speaking more loft means less side-spin. But it is best to have it fitted to your swing. I would recommend taking Otto where you bought it and have them take a look at your swing and get it adjusted to your swing

Search for the thread where @iacas explains D-plane. That'll answer your questions in awesome depth and dispel some myths you seem to have about spin. There's a great video where he explains it with visuals. I'm on my phone or I'd link you directly.

Thanks for the replies guys. I just got back from the range. I changed the loft from 10.5 to 9.5 and really hit her good and straight. But I always seem to hit great at the range with it, but when I get on the course something changes and I just can't hit it well consistently. Not like the range. I'll be piping it on the range. Maybe, Im just a range pro lol. But it did seem to fly better set at the 9.5 position. Supposed to play tomorrow, so Ill see how it goes.

Figuring out the loft depends on what your spin rate and swing speed is. You want to launch it high with low spin.

Played 18 today on a pretty challenging course and set my driver -1 at 9.5 and really drove the ball well. hit every FW but 2 so I was absolutely thrilled with that. I will keep experimenting with it though to make sure I have it dialed in for me. Thanks for your guys help.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
