What's the best way to reach out to local golfers? I have a tourney with a $5,000 Closest To Pin prize!

Hey guys. What do you suggest is the best way to reach out to local golfers?

I have a charity foundation for children's cancer and a sponsor reached out to me and said that if I have a scramble style golf tourney he will donate a $5,000 cash prize for a closest to the pin prize. Obviously that would create a lot of buzz. I could do $1,250 on each of the par 3s or mix it up. This sponsor is so generous that I think I could do this in multiple states. My question is besides Facebook is there a way to reach out to local golfers?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I think your best bet is going to be to print fliers and put them up at the golf course and at a few local driving ranges (with permission, of course).

This is one of those cases where you probably can't beat "old school" marketing.

You could team up with a local golf course or even a local business.

No matter how you cut it the ringers are going to find out. Make it hard, talk to the groundskeepers. This is just my humble opinion.

If you put flyers around all the local courses people will see. The best place to contact golfers is on the course itself, because they'll always be there.

This would not be legal under the rules of amateur status. It would violate the amateur status of EVERY person playing in the competition.

Prizes must be vouchers or goods, not cash, and up to a certain limit; $750 if memory serves me correctly in the U.S. And that is for TOTAL prizes from one competition.

Hole-in-one competitions give vehicles as prizes.  I think as long as it is not in a tournament (Like a scramble) under the rules of golf, there is no amateur prize amount limit.

3-2. Prize Limits

a. General

An amateur golfer must not accept a prize (other than a symbolic prize ) or prize voucher of retail value in excess of $750 or the equivalent, or such a lesser figure as may be decided by the Governing Body . This limit applies to the total prizes or prize vouchers received by an amateur golfer in any one competition or series of competitions.

There are exceptions for hole in one prizes. a NTP is not a hole in one.

Regarding the original question, if you are not already in a golf network where you know golfers who know golfers, my advice is not to attempt this.

You will be creating a huge amount of work for yourself - just because you have a friend who wants to advertise. This is very much putting the cart before the horse.

Normally, people offer prizes when tournament orgnisation is underway. It should not be the catalyst for someone else to do something he doesn't know how to do.

It might be better if he "reaches out" to a recognised charity and gives them his $5000. :-P
