99 (ESC) at The Crossings at Carlsbad last week. Great course, I love courses that have a spread out hole design (and not the bunched up stuff mostly around here). I honestly didn't play too bad but I had several killer blow up holes.

One was #8 530 yard par 5. I absolutely piped my driver from a slightly elevated tee position and got a ton of roll out. This is where I shot myself. Buddy I was playing with told me I had to go for it in two and I fought it for a minute or two. GPS on cart told me 190 to pin, 170 to carry water. Having played my normal conservative round to this point, I said "screw it, I'm on vacation" and pulled my 5 iron (I would have laid up down the left side, avoiding the water and had a easy pitch shot). Of course, I swung too hard and hit it fat, about 165, into water. Decided to drop at same spot for my 4th and this time went with 6 iron, my 175 club. I pushed it a touch to the right but my friend thought for sure it would make it but I told him "nope, it's in again". This time I dropped behind the hazard for a wedge for my 6th. Ball ended up off the green, had to chip for my 7th, and then 2-putted out. Finished +10 for front and a dreadful +17 on back.

84 (41/43) with 3 birdies on the card. Left about 5 shots on the course. So close to breakin 80.

Even par through 9 is my best.  I don't even want to think about what was my worst.

Today I shot 89... Not great; last week I played just 9 on the same course and shot 36 but the greens were as soft as butter and were holding everything. Today, hot and fast. That is my 3rd consecutive round in the 80's and I'm happy as can be.

I play a par 67 course and in my only two previous rounds this year a rusty 85 and then a somewhat better 81.

Yesterday only played 9 holes par 34 and came out of it with a 37. Just a shame that we weren't playing a full 18 because there was just a chance, a small chance of breaking 70.

I just played on Tuesday, shot a 107, but it was at a new course, i joined Penn Oaks Golf Club, slope of the white tees is 132, 6307 yards, and I have only played 18 holes one other time in the past 4-5 years, once I get out there more my score will come down, too many stupid mistakes. I may be going out this weekend to a shorter public course with my brother, around 5800 yards, so I hope to do much better.

Played a sunrise round this morning. Started with a quad.

Headed into short par 4 #18, needed a birdie to break 90 for the first time, 10 rounds and almost 2 months after breaking 100 for the first time.

Tee shot was about 25 yards short of the green. Hit my 58* 18 feet left of the flag. Lined up the birdie putt and told myself I wasn't going to leave it short. Hit it and cringed, too hard...but then it hit the back of the cup dead center and dropped for the birdie. Woot!

96 this afternoon at Teal Bend in Sacramento. Slowest round I have played in a long time. Hard to get into any rhythm when you get up to a tee and have to wait nearly 15 minutes to hit on every hole.....

Yesterday I shot an 89 at Morro Bay Golf Course, with a birdie on 18 to break 90. Today I followed that up with an 88 at Dairy Creek Golf Course (haven't played here since when I started playing golf 2 years ago on my HS team)... Even though it was only one stroke better than yesterday's round, today's really set me up to play better golf now.

I finally have decided to leave the driver at home after today. I drove the ball 3 times, one a 150 mega hook, a 250 dead straight drive, and a top that rolled maybe 50 yards into the left rough.

Meanwhile on the other 12 holes I used my 3 Hybrid. What a complete difference. Worst tee shot was due to a bad kick, 220 into the right rough. The rest were a consistent 210-220 straight or slightly off line. Only two shots didn't land in the fairway. Considering I play from the beginner male tees, 200+ yard shots leave me no more than SW to 8i on almost all holes and the par 5s are still reachable in 2 with two solid 3Hs.

Only a few chunks, no penalty strokes, one 3 putt, and a few lip out pars were the minor mistakes. My approach game was the major disappointment. I couldn't get any shot from 15-40 yds within 10 feet of the hole, which killed a lot of my par chances and ruined 3 birdie attempts.

Overall though this was a big step forward in my golf game. I was finally able to swallow my pride and take a consistent and safe 220 yard 3H, instead of god knows what with the driver. I could have gone much lower at Morro Bay with the 3H, since Dairy Creek is a much harder course both in actual difficulty and the psychological stuff it puts you through. 2 strokes off my handicap in two days!

    • StuM,  I have, in the past, added a left handed club. (Ususally a 7 iron) However, I usually take a stroke penalty and move the ball to where I want it.  I play for fun and in a pinch can use theback side if my club if I don't want the penalty stroke.    RetiredOldMan,  Terry
    • So, Brendan Sorsby, Texas Tech transfer QB, was found guilty of sports betting by the NCAA. He admitted to it. He placed thousands of bets over multiple years while at Indiana and Cincinnati. This included betting on his own teams.  The NCAA rules ban athletes from betting on any sport (college or pro).  A retired visiting judge from Tarrant County, Texas has put an injunction on the NCAA ruling. He is a visiting judge because the first judge was a graduate and big fan of Texas Tech, and he recused himself. The judged ruled the following... "Under Curry's order, Sorsby is permitted to play for Texas Tech's 2026 season on the condition that he continues his treatment for a gambling and anxiety disorder and serves a two-game suspension (missing games against Abilene Christian and Oregon State)."  Don't get me wrong, I don't particularly care for the NCAA. That still doesn't mean that a college can choose when or where to say, "Yea we agree to these rules for all our sports, well except in this case." Here is a breakdown from S&W. The Hidden Weapon in Sorsby’s Injunction: How a Lubbock County Court Order Quietly Neutralized the NCAA’s Most Powerful Enforcement Tool - Law Offices of Snell & Wilmer By Ryan J. Regula On June 8, 2026, Lubbock County District Court Judge Ken Curry issued a temporary injunction in Brendan Sorsby v. National Collegiate Athletic Association, Cause No. DC-2026-CV-0791 (99th Judicial District... The main judgement made sense. Sorsby, I am going to have all this harm done to me if I don't get to play. The Judge, I agree. The penalty for gambling is too harsh, so here are all these things you must do, and I will grant this injunction against the NCAA. Basically, an analogy would be when a person goes into court for a DUI and they agree to all these other things to not end up in jail.  What sucks for the NCAA is the NCAA has appealed to Texas’ Seventh Court of Appeals, based in Amarillo. All four justices that preside over the court are graduates of Texas Tech University School of Law. It would be hilarious if all four of them had to recuse themselves 🤣. For those who like to read legal rulings...
    • The chatter in my brain is when the distance is between clubs since I am pretty weak at shortened backswings, etc. I try to simply decide if being long or short is the better outcome and choose my club based on that and simply not even try for the “real” distance.  For me a full normal swing is what I strive for.
    • I saw this comment made in a golf article... "Most golfers stand over a 4- or 5-iron still negotiating with themselves. They think about how hard to swing, whether they have the right club, if they have the aim correct and more. It’s a lot to deal with and long irons punish the “half-in” golf swing." I am not sure the "most golfers" is correct regarding the bolded part. I can understand if there is a bunker, water, and/or OB that a lot of golfers would be fixated on that. I am not sure that leads to ending up more times there. Pending your level in golf, the variance is so large in outcomes, it could be just with in the expected outcomes. I can understand if have a big lake on the right side of the hole being one of the most terrifying shots for right-handed amateur golfers.  I am not sure many golfers are standing over the ball talking to themselves, "Ok, maybe I should step back and pull the 4-iron. Am I lined up right? Oh, the wind came up, should I swing harder? What am I going to have for dinner tonight, maybe steak. (Joking, somewhat 😛)" A question is that how much chatter do you get while standing over the ball. Are you questioning the everything about your golf shot?
