Better Blade than Miuras?

I was at the goodwill looking for used golf clubs as I often do and stumbled upon this 4 iron. It's a Jack Nicklaus tour forged Macgreggor Murfield lite. The head has zero ofset and is very small it's a beautiful club the shaft is a bit short and I already regripped it with a secret grip. I was stunned that it had little offset compared to my mizuno's it's quite significant.  I hit this club and it goes much straighter than my regular shot and with a new shaft who knows, It might not be tournament legal because of the grooves but overall for a 1980's club and the 4 dollar price im happy. A set of miuras cost 2,500 just for reference.

I think that I had a 3 iron from this set at some point. My brother in law had found it in his garage when he moved in or something like that. A buddy of mine also played an entire set of these (or something very similar, I don't really remember now) in high school. He was pretty good with them, I couldn't hit that 3 iron at all though.

Nice clubs. What's funny about the groove rule that makes older equipment invalid is that Mark Broadie's look at it indicated the groove rule had no effect on scoring. It's all been the hotter / more forgiving clubs and lower-spinning ball (which they don't even test with ballistic tests anymore - just physical rebound).

It does cause more flier shots out of the rough. A lot of players stared to use height instead of spin to stop shots out of the rough.

To answer the OP, what ever a player hits the best, blade or not.

I like shopping for golf clubs at Goodwill also, I  have found vokey wedges, Nike SQ driver, kids golf sets for a steal!

Are you sure Miura did not make that MacGregor set?

Miura once forged clubs for several makers - MacGregor was one of them.

I think you'll find the loft on that 4 iron is about the same as a modern 6 iron, or a modern bladed 5 iron.

The 2010 USGA groove rule applies to all golf clubheads with a loft of 25° or higher. I would suspect the older Muirfield 4i might be 25° or more in loft. That said, check one of the USGA databases and see if the Muirfield makes the cut - not sure irons of that era had the most aggressive grooves.
