"Spin milled" = grooves. It has nothing to do with rust or not. And what's Cleveland got to do with "Spin Milled"? That's Titleist.

I thought the "Spin-Milled" referred to the circular cuts made to the face of the club. Makes since because it looks like a "spinned" effect.

But then again all milling is circular in nature just depends how you define "spinning."

Nope. The "spin milled" method refers to how the grooves are cut. Rather than rotating a "bit", they're "sawed" out. Imagine taking a little dremel saw blade and cutting the grooves. That's why the heel- and toe-side edges of the spin-milled wedges have a radius. They aren't 90° like you'll see on other wedges.

From the Titleist site: "A special circular saw style cutting tool is used to create precise grooves with a steeper draft angle and a tighter edge radius for increased friction." That's the "spin milled." The circular marks on the face don't do anything but make the face look a little different. That's just how they're sanded down and smoothed out, basically.

No. They don't even use the same groove shape.

Again, spin milling = grooves. Not the mill marks on the face.

If your irons' finish has been stripped off exposing raw steel, then yes. Otherwise, the only thing it will do is get some "rust residue" onto the surface of your other irons that will wipe away.

I had a set of the RTG 588 rusty's. Additional spin is minimal at most, if at all. Sold 'em! Try something that is CNC spin milled. I bought some MacGregor V-Foils. 52*Tour GW and 56*& 60* EZ-Outs. All 3 are spin milled and don't cost an arm and a leg!

oh, do you guys do anything to stop the wedge from getting rust all over your trunk. Also, if you blue your wedge, is it like almost reaplying an oil can finish and will also begin rusting over time?

Don't put them away wet.

Also they clean up nice if you beat them through the sand a bunch of times.

Just to clear this up a little if anyone is still interested, the spin milled does refer to the grooves as mentioned before. The Vokey Spin Milled wedges have a "CNC machined face creates a rougher surface for better spin retention on partial shots."

I live in AZ so raw clubs don't rust fast (if at all) on their own. So to answer your question I hated the oil can look but I did not want chromed wedges. I prefer raw looking wedges - plain metal. The cool thing about coke is it leaves the paint fill in place so you basically have a raw metal wedge with paintfill.

Hey, I am thinking of purchasing new wedges and I was thinking of buying an oil can spin milled, and taking the finish off using coke. Would anyone mind putting some pictures up of a vokey with the oil can taken off using coke?

They really just look like plain steal wedges. Slightly dulled plain grey steal. Nothing really exciting about them. The paint fill does stay on though so the wedge doesn't look totally stripped.

I could post some pics but would have to wait until after the holidays.

Here is a picture. Sorry for the bad quality... After you strip off the finish with Coke, the wedge looks really cool. Mine doesn't because I'm trying to get it to rust so I keep beating it up in dirt and sand.

Correct me if I am wrong on this...

But wouldn't beating your club into the sand actually help knock the rust off your club?

That's correct. I guess I should be putting it in mud more instead. I'm just going to let it rust naturally though, that's the way to go.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
