Also, I've talked with others about "breakthrough rounds" and these can really accelerate your progress.  Unfortunately, you don't know when it will happen, but it will build your confidence when it does.  For example, the first time I broke 80 I shot a 75.  Going so much lower than I was accustomed to helped me realize that it wasn't a big deal, and then I started shooting in the 70s more often.  You really have to let your great rounds build your confidence...too many golfers make the mistake of dismissing these rounds as flukes.

This happened to me, I was stuck in my league scores around a 44 at best early this year,  I came so close to breaking it so many times but one day I shot a 39 to beat it, the pressure just fell off.  I started consistently shooting low 40's in league.  Then I stayed there for about a month, shot a 37,  now I don't usually have an issue shooting +2-+4  a round.

My uncle never played golf until he retired.  He got the golf bug really bad, started playing and practicing all the time and was a single digit handicap inside of 3 years.  He obviously had some natural talent . .plus tons of free time and the ability as well as the desire to play and practice a lot.

It took me around 4 years to break 90.  Then I stopped playing for about 2 years although I kept practicing and took a few lessons.  I'm hoping to play sometime in the next couple weeks . .I have no idea what I'll shoot.  I know my swing is a lot better than it was the last time I played.

I'm a complete hack with the lack of talent to back it up. To make matters worse, I've never budgeted for lessons.

1st - First ever round was a 135 on a fairly easy course. By season's end was shooting 110s. (Approx. average 120)

2nd - Busted 100 for the first time in May. Had a handful of other rounds in the 90s (Approx. average 110)

3rd - Busted 90 for the first time (on the area's easiest course.   (Approx. average 102)

4th - First year keeping a handicap. Shot personal low round of 84. Progress slowing. (Appox. average 98).

So progress. Just painfully slow.
