Hey TST Universe,

So last weekend I took a pilgrimage down to a fitter to see what I really needed for my game (first time I've ever done this)...

I was a little scared at first, because you don't want to be forking over your hard earned money for what you don't know.

I did a full bag fit, but didn't want to spend like $1500 I don't have on new clubs... So I just purchased fitted wedges.

I'm 6'5" 28 years old and I have long arms but short legs for my heighy (long torso)...

Anyway my static fit is for irons and wedges, midsize Grips, +1" and 2° upright...

We started with a 6-iron to that specification and I was struggling with it. So after some work with the impact tape and the lie tape, we actually found that 2° upright was marginally too much. So he gave me another 6-iron std length and 1° upright... I had to reach for them a bit, but was hitting them slightly better. After a lot of fiddling around with launch numbers, and strikes, he gave me a 6-iron 1° upright and ½" longer than standard... And started catching the meat if the club more often...

I didn't pay a dime of my own money for the fitting (I had a gift certificate, that a friend got me)... I picked up a couple TGS wedges for $35 a piece to those specs and I'm in the process of having my irons adjusted to those specs... (All three sets... V-Blades, CU, and E8)...

My question is: Has anyone else had an experience like this where their static fitting and dynamic fittings had completely different results? Mine weren't that odd, but surprising.

My fitting only had minor changes, but I am 5' 10". A good fitting removes the unknown and gives you more confidence. Now you can just focus on the swing.

I've never been fit by someone else. I fit myself to some things in the past, but I have the capability to do so.

I don't really trust a static fit to do anything more than to get you in the neighborhood.

UPDATE: As you guys know I have picked up new clubs, and entirely new set.

I haven't been on the course yet. (Unpredictable weather here in the Finger Lakes of NY), but I've been to the range a couple times and to a facility with a good simulator and here's what I've noticed.

1. I'm longer than I was last year... Almost every club I can take a full swing with I'm at least a bit longer with.

2. I'm making solid contact a lot more often, sure I still have an occasional clunker  (everyone does) but it's more of an outlier now.

3. I'm much more confident with the new properly fit clubs than the old off the rack clubs.

4. I can actually hit a DRAW for the first time in 6 years, yes I still have the fade available, but I've actually been hitting baby draws with my new clubs.

5. Finally, properly fit clubs are not the overnight solution to a better game... The game still needs work in some areas, but I'm excited for this year, I think I'm going to get a few lessons so that I can get better, maybe not scratch, qualify for the Newport Cup in a few years time...

I'm actually going to get fitted this spring too. I just want to get my swing grooved a little better before I do. We've only been playing a week or so outside here in Michigan.

For someone that also doesn't want to spend $1,500 on clubs, what would you suggest for keeping the costs down? I was thinking about new irons, I need a distance club, and maybe need to have my driver adjusted. Anyway, I'm a little nervous about getting fitted and am grateful for you sharing your experience. THanks.

I actually spent $2,000 when all was said and done...

My suggestion to keep cost down if you must go with an OEM, get last year's model if it is still in production or can be had.

Also maybe stick with irons and later get your driver... or driver and irons... they can do a full bag fit and you usually can fill in the blanks later.

Also, make sure you get fit with a good Launch Monitor available, I had mine done on FlightScope which is pretty doggone accurate.

We actually ended up going with 2° up as opposed to 1° because 2°, 1° was a little flat with the EXI.

Good to know. I'm thinking irons and maybe a hybrid. I like my driver. I'm not sure if they could adjust it for me. But we'll see. Thanks again.

High tech fitting is great and all or most pros do this but I have found the cheapest and sometimes more effective way is rehearsal fitting. Simply get the club or clubs you want fitted as length lie etc and rehearse impact on a black rubber mat mostly with wedges and irons not so much woods.. Make sure you have your playing golf shoes on just eye it diligently along with a few swings. Ideally you want some flex and the toe should be upwards a bit upright just a hair so impact should be a smidge towards the heel on the bottom of the club. The reason for this is there is a mm cushion between the ball and the dirt the face will flex bow and return square. Another reason is golf courses are rarely flat so if the ball happens to be above your feet you can just choke up. This is some how more custom to me rather then relying on some machine or a golf pro guy. My Dad bought some callaway diablo irons from Golf galaxy near here and the guy recommended +2 upright just because he's been doing it for 10 years! After further examination the toe was to upright at address and just a terrible build for my dad's height and swing.

What? Here's one reason why that all strikes me as a bad idea: shaft droop is very real.

One more thing @rfeight, I play Tour Edge Exotics clubs, and I mean every club in my bag is an Exotics club...

If I ever find something better, I'll switch companies, But I hit the XCG Driver from 2010, with my V-Blade irons from 2000... (I actually accidentally discovered Tour Edge in 2010)... the fairways are some of the "longest you will ever hit"...  they are on the tour and in a lot of amateur's bags in the midwest... there's a few of us on here...

Not promoting one brand over another just saying...

The scariest part, is finding out the clubs you have are not fit properly...

I'll give you two keys to getting over the nerves of a dynamic fit.

1) Relax.

2) Don't be afraid to ask questions...

This is what I did in my irons that's all hardly 100% recommend it to everyone else. I ended up with an 8 iron the same length as my 7 based on flex and just eyed and tested the rest as close as I could then cut lo length and re gripped them. I later went to a golf shop had em fitted quickly and bent one degree flat one the 8-6 and 9 iron as they were longer.

Just curious. Did you hit the lower end exotics like the hot launch or bazooka irons? If so what were your thoughts? The EI's are gorgeous just most likely out of my price range and ability.

Yes, I hit the Hot Launch line ($399 for a set of eight irons), I hit the Bazooka Max D45, and last year's model the E8 in Drivers. I hit a lot of different clubs over the winter.

Hot Launch is probably your best bet if you're going the route of the more affordable... The EX9 line (Which Includes the EXi and EXd irons) Probably are some of the best looking heads on the market, TE is more aerodynamic than ever not as much drag.

@sirhacksalot, please please get fitted for any new clubs, the Hot Launch is a good club for improving golfers. My wife doesn't know it yet, but once she gets a few lessons and is hitting ball better more consistently, Im probably going to get her a fit set of Hot Launch clubs, it maybe next season but we'll see...

    • Day 27 (7 Dec 25) - Got in a few swings with 9i and hard foam balls in backyard.  Setup weight fwd (rebuilt left foot really lets me feel the weight in a slightly painful way) - kept the backswing to around 9 o’clock focusing on contact and resulting divot pattern.  Like how the hard foam balls come off the face (almost like real balls in sound).  A good abbreviated session as I only able to hit about a dozen balls in the fading light.
    • Day 117 12-7 A bit of chipping practice today. Full swing- hit some real balls to see where Im at.
    • Not the part I was replying to: Handicaps did not go down much (like 0.14 on average IIRC?) when we went from 10/20*0.96 to 8/20. And a good chunk of that was from the +s.
    • I think he meant in the UK. The old system was completely different from the new one. 10/20 x 0.96 vs 8/20 would really only impact very low handicaps I think. The 0.96 serves to increase differentials for plus differentials, where 8/20 vs 10/20 works to lower differentials for all. I don't know many plus golfers who would be upset that their index got lower. A lot of really good players don't even really keep their handicaps up-to-date. They're much more interested in their WAGR rankings which get them entries to certain events.
    • Day 433 - 2025-12-07 Got some work in after Junior Elite before a night of sports (and the return of my wife!). Backswing work. Similar to what a lot of my juniors are doing.
