So I have a set of taylormade speedblade irons. They're graphite reg flex and I hit the ball well with them. However someone said that I should go with steel shaft because I have a higher swing speed. Any thoughts on that?

However my delima is this: I have 4-pw in speedblades. I need a three and a 2 iron. I can't find a three iron and I am throwing the thought of a taylormade UDI 2 iron for a replacement. So in your opinion should I get a three iron of something new and whatever I can find or get a new fitted set and have it ordered with a 2 and 3 iron?

Unless you actually have measurement of your swing speed and/or get fitted then you don't really know what will fit your swing. Golf shaft flex is not standard across the industry. Also, it's more about how the shaft bends with your swing that matters. You can have one shaft be the same flex and react totally different to your swing.

Get fit, find out what works for your swing. No way someone can stand there, look at your swing with the naked eye and say, "You need a stiff flex shaft".

So keep'em.  As the above poster said if you need to spend some money then get custom fit if you want a reasonable chance of your new irons being an improvement.

Who is anyone else to say what you "need"?  But your current 4-iron has 20* of loft and almost no one, no matter how fast they swing, plays a lower lofted iron.  If you're anything like 99.99% of all golfers you "need" one or two hybrids and/or fairway woods.

I need a three iron for some of the par 5s. I hit my 4 iron well and lower irons are something I tend to feel as comfortable as I do a pitching wedge hitting.

The two iron is for the narrower holes where I don't want to risk a error with the driver.

Sounds like you've thought it out.  I like long irons over hybrids myself.  I'm more accurate with a long iron than a hybrid.  Hybrids do typically get the ball higher though.

I personally don't like mixing different irons.  There would have to be variation.  I keep my set the same, but trial and error might work for you.

I can tell right away when someone needs stiffer irons.  You don't mention swing speed, but if you hit the ball with any distance, the regular flex will cause dispersion and typically the torque of graphite shafts causes higher dispersion.  Steel is the way to go unless you have health issues or have a slow swing speed and need help with distance.  Graphite helps distance, not accuracy which is what is required for irons.

This may be helpful in answering some of your questions.  Look at Step 2 for a general guide on shaft flex.  I'm a 7 or 8 iron for 150 yards, which makes me a firm flex for my irons, which is what I actually believe is correct.  My carry distance for my driver indicates a stiff flex, which is what I have.

You could demo some TaylorMade irons with steel shafts that are similar to the SpeedBlades to see if you like those better.

The SpeedBade 3-iron is 17° so there really isn't any room for a 2-iron, especially when the loft of the UDI 2-iron is 18°. So if you want a long iron, go with the SpeedBlade 3-iron or UDI 2-iron.

For your shaft question, I would recommend you go get fitted. A graphite shaft isn't really a bad thing solely because of a high swing speed. If that were the case you wouldn't see the exclusive use of graphite in modern driver shafts. It's just a matter of ensuring the shaft profile is one that properly fits your swing, which is something that a fitter can answer.

With a 4 iron at 20* loft, it is difficult to figure out the lofts you would get in a 3 and 2 iron.  Likely 17 and 15.  At those lofts I would rather recommend a 3 and 5 wood.

WRT to getting a new set, get fitted and then see if the current clubs are ill-suited for your swing.  If you are hitting it well with the current irons, don't change for the sake of it.  Change to improve your game (dispersion and accuracy first and then distance second).  Also look at the loft when analyzing distance rather than iron number printed on the club

Solution was I finally found a 3 iron speedblade

I played with a guy a couple of weeks ago that had the TM Speedblades.  Looked and felt nice.  Really kicked the ball.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
