Irons, Irons, Irons!

Just started playing golf a year ago and I'm now getting to a point were I'm taking my game seriously, even though I suck, and was wondering what would be a good set of clubs to go with. Right now I play Ping Eye 2.  Should I get a more up to date club or just take some lessons.  Right now I'm barely breaking 100. I plan on sticking with game improvement clubs just not sure which brand. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.  I have an average swing speed of around 85,

Can't do better than the Pings.  Just make sure they aren't a goofy spec.  Red dot, black dot, or blue dot with zz or jz shafts at standard length fit 90% of the population.

All companies make really good GI clubs. It just depends on how they look to you and how you feel swinging them. If I had to list my top companies,

Ping, their G series clubs are always really good
Taylormade, they had good GI clubs
Callaway
Cobra

Agree with this. You're not giving up much playing a classic set like the Eye 2s. Lessons would be a great investment. If you have a decent video recording device lessons through evolvr would be a great place to start.

I agree on the lessons.  Learn to hit what you have now.  Once you understand the game a little better, you'll know what irons are best for you.

I think it depends on how you like to buy. I like to buy quality used irons but a brand new golf bag so I look like I'm not a cheapo. If you go one or two models back Taylormade or Callaway are not expensive

Thanks guys I really appreciate the feed back. The clubs are blue dot with zz lite shafts. I'm 5'll so I think they're fine and I don't really notice anything off when I hit them.  I actually really love the pitching wedge from 80-95 yards out. I'm going to schedule my first lesson soon and I'll make sure to bring a recording device.

That's what I'm realizing.  I was at Dick's yesterday and now that all the new models are coming in the old one's are being discounted dramatically.  But I think I'm going to stick with the ping eye 2 irons since everyone seems to be at a consensus that they are fine to be starting out with.  However, I may be in the market for a driver because some of these drivers are so inexpensive right now. I'm considering the callaway xr or x2 because it's like 129 bucks or something.  Right now I play a nike ignite 450cc. I paid 20 bucks for it and it's been great the only thing is, I'm hearing some noise down by the hosel which i suspect isn't the best thing but the face isn't cracked or anything.  It sounds like there is sand in it.  Anyways, I appreciate all the feed back I'm new to site but really like the community of golfers and the fact I can get on here and really express any concerns or ask questions.

Every golf season, I run across people still playing Eye2 irons - often very well. Some are older guys like me, others are in their 20s. Eventually a newer set might fit you better, but for right now Eye2 should do the job.

Eye 2 irons are still very relevant in todays golfing population. They should do you just fine until you can get your swing into good shape. IMO ill take lessons everyday over new irons.
