I pay $110 per year to play in the Men's Golf Club at my local public course. I've been in the club for 18 years now... seems quite fair to me, cost to benefit.

You don't have to join your local golf club to obtain an official USGA handicap. Most public courses offer handicap services, which shouldn't cost you more than $20-30 a year. I get mine through the PGA TOUR Partner's Club for $25 a year; there's a club here in Myrtle where I play where you can get it for $10.

If you're paying more than $30, you're paying too much.

Not neccessarily. Its $45 to join at my home course, but thats not just for a USGA handicap. Its also to join the mens club, play in club tournaments, and enjoy club benefits. Most clubs are this way, they don't just offer handicap services. It costs money to run a mens club, if you just want a handicap and aren't interested in club tournaments, there are better ways to get one. If you join a club that's worth a s%#t it gonna cost you some money. Remember you get what you pay for.

This explains my free handicapping... I need to go play some tournaments now that my SCGA handicap information got to me.
