I am a 24 hcp player, and have been for years. I just don't play enough to improve, and I'm "OK" with that. I still enjoy playing. Having said that, how often is it worth getting new clubs to take advantage of improvements in  technology? My clubs are about 9 years old. I realize my score won't change too much, but at my level I'll take whatever help I can get.

Thanks.

I am same HCP as OP...Played same irons for 8 years.  About a year ago I Thought about getting a new set but guy at the range suggested I get the lie adjusted.  I started out with clubs 1.5"over standard length and a 2* upright.  I had them re-set and it did make a real difference for me.  Probably gonna look at another set of irons in next year or so, but still hitting the current Irons okay.

@Artimas, go to a good store and hit different clubs.  If you find a set offering huge improvement over your present set, then seriously consider it.  Accuracy and distance should improve assuming your old set is not fitted to you and you get a set fitted to your swing

What's in the bag

  • Taylor Made r5 dual Draw 9.5* (stiff)
  • Cobra Baffler 4H (stiff)
  • Taylor Made RAC OS 6-9,P,S (regular)
  • Golden Bear LD5.0 60* (regular)
  • Aidia Z-009 Putter
  • Inesis Soft 500 golf ball

Might also be cost effective to go and get re-fit on your current irons - loft and lie can be bent from the existing set.  Fitted to new shafts and fitted shaft lengths can also have impact.

Lots of players get lofts and lies re-bent annually.

Technology is half tech, half salesjob......but getting fitted is usually a benefit

Edit:  and then I go and read the last couple comments and see that advice is already given.

    • Day 80: a bunch of mirror work ole watching Michigan lose. Working on grip and downswing feels.
    • Day 5 - 2024-10-05 Hit some somewhat soft pitching wedges. The outside and inside, particularly the outside of the left thumb where my right hand goes on it, is still pretty sore. I don't think I'll do more damage, but I'm reluctant to do too much because I don't want to compensate or alter my motion.
    • Day 156 (05 Sep 24) - Played new to me course today, it’s near our beach place and have been wanting to play it for a couple of years now.  It’s a neat Par 70 that plays just over 6k from the tips, played the whites 5,500 +/-.  Tight fairways and severely undulating greens made for some great shot strategy.  Wound up with an even 80 that included two lost ball penalties.  Putter was solid - 28 total.  Wedge play kept the pars happening - 6 of the 9 pars were up and downs.  Not bad for the first time on a new course.
