Have tryouts for my high school team the coming week. I usually shoot right around 41 for 9 holes, occasionally I'll shoot better, and occasionally I will do worse. The team can carry 10-12 kids; is this score enough to make the cut? If it's not, how far am I off?

41 is a plenty good average for most schools in states with limited golf seasons. Unless your school has a particularly stout golf program you should be fine.

Like @SavvySwede said, unless your school is particularly good or you're a senior golfer(they usually want he older guys to be better), then you'll be fine.

There are some good kids on there, but I think I could catch the last few in the pack; the team's decent - good but not elite by any means. I'm also a freshman so I don't have to worry about senior expectations which is good. Thanks for the feedback, made me feel a bit better about my chances. I got 2 days of playing 9 each day for the bulk of the tryout starting today, so I'll see how I do.

Good luck! I know when I tried out for my high school team my coach kept a couple freshmen to develop them and we all turned into pretty good players. Shooting 41 as a freshman will get you on the team for sure as long as it isn't a team that goes to state year in and year out. Heck, I'd even assume that 45 would get you on. I know my senior year our #5 guy shot 85-89 consistently and we were a top 100 team in the state.

Every school is different.  The competitive kids on most teams shoot in the 70s consistently.  You are not that far from being in the thick of the competition.  Some people play best with some pressure and some do not do well at all.  Best of luck and keep practising.

Tryouts over...didn't play nearly as well as I would've liked, but it's very very close. It's me and a good friend of mine for the last spot. I don't know how my coach is deciding, but my guess is that it's score-based. Out of our 4 combined rounds, he had the best score; he beat me by one stroke in that round. However, if they are averaged, I am a stroke-and-a-half better. My second round was better than my first, his second was worse. I've shown that I clearly want to make it more, people know that, but he had 2 brothers that made the team when they were at our high school. I really don't know here. I did ask my coach if he would average the scores and he said something along the lines of, "yeah, I look at both." I honestly have no idea. Opinions?

Can't read the coaches mind obviously but I think a lower average is better than one lower round. If I were the coach I would also be looking at some of the intangibles. I'd take the longer hitter and/or better ballstriker over the kid who sprays the ball and gets up and down often because it's easier to fix/improve someones short game than their full swing.

Made it by two strokes. Played in a much more relaxed and laid-back group yesterday than usual; shot what I usually shoot, which was good. Thanks for all the help in here, really appreciate it

Good for you young man!  Before you posted your good news, I was going say that 41 was probably going to be good enough to make the team.

I made my HS golf team shooting 42-45 consistently.  Always got to play, but never in the 5 man, 4 scores count format.  Still had a lot of fun, practiced a lot, made some great friends and played a lot of free golf!

Enjoy the season.

It depends on the school. Where I golfed nobody was cut because not enough people tried out to need to cut anyone. There was another school in the same division (a private school) that had a team with ~15-20 people on it that all could shoot 80 or better on most days (they recruited pretty aggressively since the private schools get to skirt CHSAA rules at times). In most schools though I wouldn't anticipate you having any trouble making at the Junior Varsity team if not the Varsity team, depending on the school.

WHOOPS! I didn't see you posted back.

Congratulations! Playing high school golf was one of the best parts of my high school experience, and you should enjoy it! At the very least, you'll get to get out of school to go golf every now and then. My team also bought us lunch on the way home, which was icing on the cake.

I made the Varsity golf team as a Freshman. Averaging around 41 -42 put me in the 4th spot. Our JV team were 44-46 average golfers. I would think kids today are much better then when I played 35 years ago. Congrats and good luck. The best thing for me was all the great courses I got to play.

Mind telling me how to do that? Apologies, I'm new to this...
