I happened to see this video the other day where Dave Pelz demonstrates what you're talking about for chipping:

I can't see myself being able to do what Pelz is showing on anything but a short running chip.  For a punch shot, like to get out of the trees . .I love my 4w.  I hit it like a foot off the ground and it will just roll forever.

That's the only kind of punch I can really talk about, lol.  My lofted punches have this crazy knack for hitting into whatever I'm trying not to hit into.  I don't really ever try to punch it if I'm not in trouble.

Edit-  As for Pelz chipping technique . .I haven't tried but I'm happy just chipping normally with a less lofted club to get a roll-out.

Wow, that is one cool short game setup he's using!

I just can't think of any scenarios where I would choose that over just putting it or hitting a wedge with a putt stroke.

Agree, at that distance and on that super smooth terrain there's really no reason to use anything other than a putter or doing something other than putter like stuff.

Funny how most teachers show you how to do stuff where it's super easy anyway. No wonder why most people have short games that suck. :-D

I prefer how Erik shows you how to chip or pitch out of actual rough, where you can barely see the top of the ball. :content:

It may have something to do with him living in the desert? More hard-pan lies?

I dunno, seems to me that the thinner the lie, the more a putting stroke makes sense.

I guess there's more than one way to skin a cat and it all comes down to what gives you the best results on a consistent basis; that's your game, go with it.

Yeah, but you don't want to roll a ball over desert hardpan with stones do you? I would think getting to the green surface with a little bit of loft would be preferable. I know that's not the scenario he's showing, but just speculating maybe that's why he likes that technique, which he can also use with more lofted clubs.

If the green is like 10 feet above you with a lot of fringe and you want to skip it up the slope. Even then I wouldn't put the ball that far back.

I carry a 1iron so I just place the ball in the back of my stance and swing smoothly. I will also stand a touch closer to the ball as that helps keep the trajectory low.

If I'm close enough to hit a little chip like that and the green is 10 feet above me, there better be some stairs or something.

I guess. I've never really encountered terrain like that. Most of the courses around here are if the parkland variety. I'll probably need to learn a few new shots if I ever golf in the desert.

Whenever I'm watching golf, I always watch to see how pro's play low punch shots & I've never seen anyone else do this (they just play it back in their stance, NEVER behind their rear foot) - seems odd to me, as it works so well.

They don't do that because they're capable of delivering the grip of the club forward to take loft off. They don't have to "cheat" it.
