I have found that my swing speed reaches a maximum of 100 mph with a 44.5" driver.  Anything longer than that doesn't help.  I tried a 48" Cobra Long Tom once and could only swing it 95 mph.  Has anyone else tried this experiment?  It is important to make sure club weight is the same across the test for a fair comparison (although the long tom was actually a bit lighter).

This bugs me because most "game improvement" drivers I feel I should be playing have this unnecessary extra length built into the stock setup.  Thus I end up using, and getting best results with, "players drivers" like the Adams Fast 12 LS, Ping i-series, Titleist, or old-school Cobra, Nike, etc.  I have even tried shaft-swapping with both Cobra and Ping (pro shaft in GI head) and it just doesn't seem to work for improving contact.  I guess I should be satisfied as any 440cc+ head is miles more forgiving than the older stuff, but the industry game-improvement "standard" still bugs me.

I have a couple of drivers I use. One is a low profile, square looking thing. The other is a full size driver, bigger looking critter. The have identical shafts, and lengths. Both club heads weigh the same. The low profile is 2 mph faster through the hitting zone per Callaway's swing monitor. The tech says it was probably the difference in wind resistance. Other differences in ball flights have both of these clubs hitting balls the same carry distance. Again per Callaway's swing monitor.

I use the low profile 99% of the time because it "feels" easier to swing.

It's not just shaft length but shaft weight and head weight that impact swing speed.  Callaway V Series and GBB drivers used lighter weight shafts to help increase swing speed.

Believe me I have studied the weights at length as well.  Nothing is lighter than the Cleveland XL270/Altitude/CG Black.  Cobra Long Tom is similarly light, even the Cobra Amp Cell is abnormally light with a 190g head.  The Ping G25 and newer G drivers have extra weight built into the head (206g) that is offset by a counterbalanced shaft -- this seems to work as I am also able to hit my 100 mph max with the G25.  Most clubfitters would probably agree that if I can swing a slightly shorter&heavier setup at the same speed it is probably the way to go.  I just want to know if anyone else has had the same experience where ~44.5" and say, 290 grams, gives the same swing speed for them as any of the longer/lighter setups.

Never compared on a monitor - but I know that my swing speed with a 45" driver was around 106-107.  I also know that I now use about a 44.5" driver and choke up at least another inch and haven't lost any distance from before.  Don't know if my swing speed has gone down or not, just know that I hit the center of the face more often. :)

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
