I've never witnessed an under-par round before, but I've seen a handful of 73's, 74's and 75's.

Most memorable was the first time I had every played with someone who was way, way better than me.  We were playing a county course and he was pretty much just screwing around.  I was playing from the white tees... he was at the tips, which was only about 700 yards different, but he didn't hit anything but irons all day.  He made it look simple.  When he did miss a green, he'd make chipping look like it was something he did in his sleep.  I'd never, up until then, seen someone be able to spin the ball around the green like he did.

He posted a 74 that day.  I've played with a buddy who missed qualifying for the US Open by a single stroke and I've seen him throw up a 73 and 75 after not touching a club for 3+ months.  The 73 was on punched and sanded greens and he was draining putts from 20+ feet throughout the round.  Clearly some luck involved there, but... for the most part, he was inside 10 feet with his approaches the majority of the day.

They say the pros are on another level entirely and I'd love to witness it myself... but, alas... none of them want to watch me hack it around the course, so I'll stick to posting my triple-digit totals and watch the good players I get to play with get close to par.

Well, mine was for 9 holes: a guy I was playing with was 5 under through 8 holes, and bogeyed the 9th hole to fall back to -4 through the front 9.  For me, what was memorable about it was how casual it seemed.  We were talking about his business and what I did for work, and he was hitting fairways and greens pretty easily, and making seemingly every putt.  He didn't hit it much further than me, but his swing seemed pretty effortless.

We only played 9 holes because It was a 9-hole outing at a country club I was considering joining, and they wanted me to play with other (relatively) young members at the club.  This guy happened to be a former collegiate tennis player, who was something like a +1 or +2 handicap.  These are the stats on the front 9 (we played from the Granite tees):

My low round is -4.......a 68.   I've played with plenty of guys who scored lower, but the round that impressed me most was 20 years ago and it was BY FAR....not the best score!!!   LOL....

This guy hit it into the trees on what seemed like every hole.......he hit the ball into terrible spots and missed a ton of greens/short-sided/bad places.......he proceeded to get the ball up and down out of everything short of a trash can...made a few birdies along the way.....and carded a -2 under par 70.  The long game was a complete mess, but the short game was amazing.  considering where he hit the ball, the -2 score was absolutely amazing...

best round i saw while playing was a 70 last spring.  the guy was a machine.  i dont think he missed a fairway off the tee.  and he 15 or 16 gir.  all ngir.

his course management was great.  aggressive off the tee then middle of the green unless he had wedge in his hands.

there is a nasty par 3 on the course, bout 185 or so.  huge bunker front middle to left.  green is in a hill and slopes back to front heavily.  almost u shaped.  ob right, dead long or left.  its just nasty.  pin was front right.  he hit a 7 iron off the box, purposely landing the ball short and right.  pitched to about 5ft under the hole and made the putt for par.  i asked him about it and he felt like that was the best shot to give himself the best chance at par and take worse then bogey completely out.  the putt he made was not a sure thing by any stretch.  he just said with the pin placement it was a bogey hole.  and he knew the next hole was a green light par 5..

I played with a pro from my home town that shot a 63 at our Country Club.   Guy was not a long hitter maybe 260 with his driver but he was dead on with his irons, wedges and putter.

    • Which was his second hole, yeah. I talked with Mav's coach/instructor last night, ha ha.
    • Yikes! Colin Morikawa withdraws on 11th tee after the practice swing made his lower back twinge.

    • My flop shots are 6-7° down (AoA). Does that answer it? 😄  The longer answer is… You have to be able to do both shots.
    • I hope you don't mind me raising this one from the dead. I got shortgamechef's video access thing for a few months in 2024. I watched his yip fix videos (the general gist is similar to the first video above, but with a lot more detail) and it made a lot of sense. I was working on it in my backyard off a mat for a while and my yippy thing was mostly gone. Aside from anything else, the flop shot using that technique is so easy and controllable. But I got onto a golf course for the first time of the year and found myself by the green on a downslope with the ball sitting down a little in the rough and I was, not to put too fine a point on it, f***ed. Shallow is all well and good from a good flat lie and I understand it, but you can't make that your be all and end all. I still don't know if it's a good idea to use steep all the time or just when you need to. I have a hard enough time with one technique, let alone too.  Just got a pitching skillest lesson with Erik and unless I misunderstood things some, he wants me a bit steeper. @iacas - where do you fall on the steep vs shallow argument and how do you vary it according to need?
