That's true that he didn't 'sleep on the lead', which is different kind of pressure. But also think about what kind of pressure you've felt when you knew you were approaching a 'best round' or breaking 90, 80, or par let a lone a score that almost no one has shot in their lifetime.

No one is saying there was no pressure.  Just teeing it up in a PGA event comes with some intensity.  But there are degrees.  Furyk is 46, been on tour 20 years, has a major, has broken 60, no-brainer HoF'er, and he had a stroke to play with on 17 amd 18.

My initial post was in response to someone who tried to compare the final group's performance with Furyk's.  The pressure on the final group from the 1st hole was immensely more than what Furyk felt.  He acknowledged today on MD that having done it already had a calming effect on him.  Then you add that the wind kicked up in the pm and 70+ plus players and their caddies had traipsed the greens in the interim, I just wanted to point out the variation between the rounds.

Furyk's achievement is singular, can't take anything away from it.  But he didn't have championship-type pressure.

No 'chaser' who's 5 or more shots out of the lead ever does feel that pressure from the first tee.

A round in the 50's by a 54 hole leader to catch someone who shot 60 in his group or the group ahead round would definitely be more pressure. When it happens in the next 50 to 100 years, I'm sure the added pressure and difficulty will be duly recognized.

Some good points, but all this discussion leads me to believe that we golfers might be the most anal people on the planet. It strikes me as somewhat absurd that we are arguing the relative merits of sub 60 rounds!

Tom Lewis, playing the Euro event, is at -11 through 14 and just bogeyed a hole to get there. Par 71 so 4 holes left with a shot at 59 ... 58 ... ??

10 birdies,  2 pars an eagle and a bogey so far

Players play, tough players win!

    • It’s winter here and time hitting at my indoor place.  This year I bought and sold a few sets so I didn’t settle in on anything. For this coming season, starting now I have a choice to make.  What set would you guys use? 1.  Nike Vapor Pro irons - They are like new, hit them some last year before I had to demo other sets.  I love them, original grips, barely used so I’m almost not wanting to use them to keep their value up.  Standard LLL and standard grips. 2. Taylormade P7TW irons - Still in the box.  Got them over a year ago but had too much to hit, never used them.  Have used a set in the past and loved them.  Ended up with my own set custom fit to me -1/4”, 1 degree flat midsize grips.  These are probably not as valuable because they are still available and they are fit to me. I hate to put the Nikes away but it makes more sense to save them than the TW’s…. I dunno….
    • Day 215 (3 Dec 24) - Another very chilly day - opted to work on easy pitches in the backyard. Worked thru the irons and wedges - focused on foot position and tempo.
    • Yes. I believe in using the same ball all of the time, including chipping and putting practice. I use the orange Callaway Supersoft.  Only $25 per dozen, and sometimes on sale for $20.
    • A 5400 yd course is not that short for gents driving it 160 yards considering the approach shot lengths they are going to be faced with on Par 4s.  Also, for the course you are referring to I estimate the Par 4s have to average longer than 260 yds, because the Par 5s are 800 yds or so, and if there are four Par 3s averaging 130 the total is 1320 yds.  This leaves 4080 yds remaining for 12 Par 4s.  That is an average of 340 per hole. Anyway, if there are super seniors driving it only 160ish and breaking 80 consistently, they must be elite/exceptional in other aspects of their games.  I play a lot of golf with 65-75 yr old seniors on a 5400 yd course.  They all drive it 180-200 or so, but many are slicers and poor iron players.  None can break 80. I am 66 and drive it 200 yds.  My average score is 76.  On that course my average approach shot on Par 4s is 125 yds.  The ten Par 4s average 313 yds.  By that comparison the 160 yd driver of the ball would have 165 left when attempting GIR on those holes.
