Recently, there was a post of using hybrid, fairway wood, or iron as an approach on the putting surface. Nothing new about that of course, but I happened to run across the same suggestion on one of Martin Chuck's short game videos. He referred to it as "the Carnoustie" and demonstrated by taking your normal stance and then walking the club up onto its toe to achieve a putting stance.  I just had not heard the term before (I live a sheltered life, I guess).  In any event, it helps, especially if one has the "jitters".  I wonder where he got the term. Was it from The Open Course or an individual?

I've never once heard that term applied to a shot, any shot.  I wonder if he simply made it up.

Dunno...or maybe it was a different term. I will have to look at the video again and listen to it.  He often puts a few "quirks" in his discussions. I remember one time, a guy from the UK took offense at his saying "Now that shot had some "Cheese" on it. He was referring to his high, spin, pitch shot.

I have never heard of it having a name, but I have heard of gripping down on a hybrid and making a putting stroke if your ball is in some thicker rough just off the green.

Precisely, I just liked the method he takes in taking the stance by "walking" it up to a more vertical position. also @DaveP043 I double checked, and yes that was the term he used. (probably made up as you said).

Might just be a local term.  I know at my home club we refer to certain actions by the guy's name who does it most often.  When a guy says "great shot" as the ball sails towards the trees, its called "____-ing" you.  I've left the actual name out, in case he ever reads this.  One lucky guy has had several actions named after him, so we have to say "___ing your line" (walking across your line, then doing the funky chicken and making it worse once he realizes he's done it) or "___ing his card"  (sitting in the corner with pencil and erasor for 5 minutes before coming to settle the bets) just to be clear.  I'm sure some day I'll use one of those terms around strangers, and they'll have no clue what I'm talking about.

I'm not Canadian!!  If I was, I'd have said "aboot, eh" instead of "about".

I have tried this technique and find distance control to be difficult. I'm sure with practice, like everything else, I could dial it it.

Heck, from everything I read, lots of us US folks may become Canadian, depending on the November results.

you've got a point there....I need to check to see if my passport is up to date (although I don't think you even need one to enter Canada) but always go to Colorado and become a "Free" man

I never liked that method either. I popped too many off the top of my 3w as it slid underneath. The longer shaft just makes it harder to control IMO, even if you are gripping down.

I have done a similar stroke with a 6 or 7 iron... the putting stroke when a foot or two off the edge of the green.  Gets it over the grass and it rolls to the hole.  I cant remember where I saw it.  Have used it quite a few times.

that's a lot easier than trying to blade it, or hit from the sole as some of the bygone era golfers did. (some still do, I surmize).

    • Day 224: played 18. Got some stuff to work on. Hit some good shots though and made 2 birdies.
    • I am in the market to buy a new or mint+ used driver. I am a high handicap player that usually uses Regular Flex Men's 10.5 degrees and I golf right handed. I can't shot shape the ball and have trouble always hitting the ball in the center of the face and it usually goes off to the right and out of play. I am trying to hit straight all the time so I can hit more fairways, also on off center shots I would like the ball to be in play so I don't sacrifice strokes all the time. I usually look for forgiveness, distance a little distance lost is ok if I am hitting more fairways then that is what i want, adjustable or non adjustable is fine, price is also a factor around 100 but under 300. I also need help getting the ball in the ball in the air and going higher. Any recommendations or other help when buying a driver are welcome and thanks
