So I tried this play it forward (tee box) thing today

That's like a course I used to play league at. The owner called the tips the "Tiger" tees!

Where I play in San Diego there is an abandoned tee box behind the black tees at the par 4 #17. Legend has it a very young Tiger hit the green from this way back tee. The details get murky.

I use old Taylor Made clubs from eBay and golf shops.

I'm playing with a buddy today that is in his 70s. I think I'll suggest we move up a tee box and have fun with it.

We played the whites yesterday at Black Swan in Georgetown, MA (5759 on the card). We usually play the Blue/White combo tees which are listed at 6142. The funny thing was on some of the holes where we were supposed to move up, the whites were where the blues are (not the blue/white holes), so we gained no distance advantage. The course must have done this to give a tee box a rest. On the second par 5, the whites were 25 yards up, but still too far back to carry the marsh (about 220 to carry), so we laid up anyway.

I did score better, shot and 85. My last few rounds there were around 90. I also had two birdies, but ironically they were not on holes where I had a distance advantage from moving up.

In one of Brad Faxon's Playing Lessons shows, he talks about the guys on his college golf team playing from different tees all the time -- even from the shortest set. What you get is different shots to hit and different looks at the course that you won't get if you play from the same set of tees all the time. It really rounds out your game.

On my home course, the red tees are set in an entirely different place -- not just directly in front of the gold tees. Parts of the course that aren't in play from the longer tees are now right in your face and you have to deal with them for the first time. It's like playing a different course.

In an attempt to break 80 this weekend I "teed it forward" and played the men's senior (gold) tees. 5,748 yards. 113 slope. I shot an 81. Still pretty darn good. It was certainly fun reaching most par 5's in 2. I did have one of those par 5's that I had a 15-ft putt for my first eagle... but missed it by ~6 inches :~( I also nearly drove a par 4. 2-ft from the green, on the fringe. That was cool. But it was something like a 70-80 ft putt because the pin was in the far back.

This is my home course. I'm not going to lie... at times I found this more challenging than when I play the regular men's tees (green), @ 6,213 yards.

I'm cracking drives a solid 250y now and at the same time I've somehow narrowed the gap as well; meaning, my spread is about 245-255 when before it was 220-245. I love my swing now. It feels so butter. It feels good enough and repeatable enough now that I'll be going to get fitted for loft on it to see if I'm at the right loft or not (it's an R1).

I found the teeing forward challenging because on a LOT of holes I couldn't use driver, or I was at an awkward spot for my usual layups and such. This was scary business to me. Also, it seems that this particular set of tees played frequently into a gap in my club set that I was able to overlook before. I had a 170-175 4i and a 200-205 3h. I frequently found myself 180-185 to a target, whether that was from the tee box or just to a safe landing area, or the green. I needed a 180-185 club to feel safe.

So I picked up the 3i for my set I found on global golf this weekend. I'll get it cut down and gripped this week. It will be nice to have this particularly for shorter courses I think. It won't live in my bag all the time, but maybe for shorter courses.
