Anybody with any experience hitting off the rear leg due to injury? I've had some left hip and knee pain recently making it hard to move to the left side.

I realize this would not be the most efficient way to swing but playing is better than not. Tx.

Yes.  After 3 left knee operations my default "miss" is a violent yank OB left.  My answer is a centered pivot; to keep my brain from screaming "don't do that!" half way down.  Another tactic is to set up with a flared left foot so whatever stress ensues is more front to back rather than lateral.  It is impossible for me to over-ride these sub-conscious considerations 100 per cent of the time; but being cognizant of them allows me to play the game rather than obsess over physical limitations.

Depending on what your injury is caused by, the easiest solution would be to look at excersises(specifically weighted excersises) to build muscle mass in though areas

I have degenerative disc's in my lower spine and they can go at any time, even getting out of the car, but since i started lifting weights and paying attention to lower back specific weights ive been trouble free for quite some time now,

It seems counter-intuitive to put stress on an injury prone location, but done slowly and properly you can build mass and strength in these areas which ultimately alleviates some issues

I've battled the "can't get to my left side" thing forever. It can be kind of tough to get your weight there when the stabbing pain(ankle) is a result.

That said, you can find ways to get your weight forward and ease some pain.

I'll flare my left foot out and open my stance, but keep my shoulders square to the line. Basically starting with the left hip already out of the way pointing left of the target and swinging down the line. The ball will fade a little.

Good luck!

not due to injury, but I have had joint problems in the past. Attended physical therapy sessions to no avail. I then used glucosimine and chondroitin tablets and have been pretty much pain free for several years now other than occasional aches and pains owing to overstressing. I used to get severe muscle spasms which rendered me practically immobile, I had been diagnosed with arthritis in lower back, but no more symptoms now.

Not with hitting off the rear leg but plenty with using "no body".   ie - weight 50/50 and then swing with arms only trying to keep weight 50/50 and not actively involve my lower body in any way.  It kind of looks funny - especially the follow through which looks really short and jerky - but I can hit it pretty decently this way.  Probably almost as far as with a normal swing and, in terms of average distance, probably a little farther since I get better strikes and fewer misses.

The words my teacher used when setting this up for me were "You need hands and arms to hit a golf ball.  Without hands and arms, you can't hit it.  You can hit it without legs".

Related to this was my first teacher who wanted to show me the same idea so he hit a bunch of 250+ yard drives while seated in a chair . .not bad for a guy who was probably 65 at the time.  So . .in conclusion . .yeah - I think you should be able to find a way to hit the ball without putting pressure on your left knee that will work out just fine . . but it might not be "hitting off the back leg" . .at least not what I envision that to mean.  Good luck!

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
